I'm having trouble with a G5 Powermac, dual 2.5 GHz, OS X 10.5. The panic logs all look about the same to me, and I don't see anything interesting. Am I missing something?

TIA

Crashing while in the graphics driver could indicate that the graphics card has a hardware fault. Does it always crash there?
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

From memory, yes (it won't boot at the moment)

I couldn't tell, does that log implicate the graphics driver directly, or is it just that the graphics driver is the only identifiable module that was nearby, kind of like the list of loaded kexts?

Will a G5 boot if no graphics card is installed? I don't have a substitute on hand

Edit: yes it boots without the graphics card. It has booted intermittently the whole time though, so this isn't necessarily determinate.

Also, from memory, all panics have been either while booting up or while going to sleep.

Well I removed the graphics card and booted again using screen sharing to see the results. The problem doesn't seem to have changed. A little more detail, if it manages to boot (which is hit or miss), then when I try to put it to sleep, it turns off the screen and stops responding, but the fans never spin down, and eventually I have to hard reset it, and it does write a panic log when this happens. Here is the log from after I removed the graphics card. Any ideas?

What other PCI cards are installed? And what USB / FW devices?

It still looks like the ATi 9700 graphics driver, which shouldn't even load when there's no GPU installed. It may be more useful to treat this as a generic KP and troubleshoot. Suspects are usually: PCI cards, bad USB devices (or drivers), bad FW devices, defective RAM, failing HD(s).

Reset your PRAM for good measure on next boot - maybe that will get it to notice the GPU's gone. Command-Option-P-R

Thanks. Since my last post, I tried trading the RAM (for another pair that had been removed from this mac before, so who knows), unplugging everything external (except ethernet, which I need for screen sharing to do the rest of this), and repairing permissions (it found lots of stuff, as always, but no mention of graphics). There were no other PCI cards, no firewire, and the only USB things were apple keyboard, logitech mouse (unplugged for most of this), and a canon printer that was never powered on today. Unfortunately, after all this it still panicked while trying to sleep. I'm out now, but I'll try the PRAM when I get home and see if the graphics drivers would stop loading, and see if that changes anything.

I also have it on my list to install a fresh OS. IIRC the optical was upgraded and later discovered to not be bootable, so I would probably clone the install disc to the second hard drive, which is conveniently currently empty. I might also try unplugging the optical, since it's not stock. Any other ideas?

RAM test - which in the case of PPC means the hardware test disc - as well as a visual inspection of the motherboard and PSU to check for bulging caps, but a reinstall of the OS has some likelihood of success.

EDIT: reading more closely, I see that you tried replacing the RAM. I'd still run the hardware test, though - it's a 15 minute job IIRC, and it might reveal some other error.

Yes, the hardware terst might flag up any issue with the PCI bus controller. If a clean OS still has the same panics referring to the graphics family and IOPCI family then I'd still suspect the logic board regardless of the hardware test.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

What is the hardware test disk? Downloadable, or I have to have gotten it when I bought the mac?

The hardware tests are a hidden partition on your install DVD. Pop in the original DVD, boot with Option held down, and you'll see the Apple Hardware Test option.

I have a Powermac MDD Dual 1.42 that's been suffering from sleep issues and random kernel panics, under Tiger and Leopard. After several troubleshooting sessions with both hardware and software, I decided to go back and reinstall Panther. My sleep issues and kernel panics have apparently gone away...go figure. Panther is a tad slower than Tiger and Leopard, but I'll take stability over speed any day. Hope this can help someone

Sincerely,

CoolStuffZone, two possible answers come to mind.

Perhaps your OS needed a reinstall. If so, reinstalling Leopard would have worked too.

The other possibility. OSX has made greater use of the GPU with each successive release. If your GPU fan is getting weak (or HS grease dried out), reverting one OS version would help. If so, this will be only temporary. You could test this by loading a GPU-intensive game, such as a full-screen FPS, and see if it locks up.

Back to my problems again

PRAM: I tried the PRAM keys, but after waiting and waiting, it never chimed again, so I'm not sure whether it triggered or not, but it certainly didn't fix the problem. I put the graphics card back in, even though I apparently never managed to make the Mac recognize that it was out, because I won't be able to boot from other drives without a monitor.

Hardware test disk: I have the original OS install disks (which are 10.3.4), but for some reason they will neither mount nor boot
I also have a retail 10.5.1 disk which does mount and boot, but has no hardware test disk partition (right? please tell me if there's a way to access it using this).

New OS: so I installed 10.5.1 fresh on a blank disk. I didn't change or install anything, but just put the G5 to sleep (to test for the panic). As before, it never fully went to sleep (fans still on, but not responsive), but didn't write any panic log like it did before. Right now I am waiting for the 10.5.8 combo updater to run, to see if either it fixes the problem or at least starts writing panic logs about it.

Recap: G5 fails to go to sleep, apparently writing a panic log while doing so (except this last time). It also sometimes freezes while booting.

Any ideas?
