You shouldn't have banned yourself from the Mac News threads.

Ongoing, apparently.

Oh.

Not to derail (I'll bring it back around) but I'm reminded of this: How China swallowed 15% of ‘Net traffic for 18 minutes | Ars Technica, in that who has the resources to kill the global internet?

I suppose it could be a Russian botnet. Or someone who is exploiting that telnet security hole from a week back?

BTW, this kind of works in my favor. You found the story either so important or interesting you started a Lounge thread for it. (i.e., forum members act as filter for worthy MacNN news stories)

NewsPoster is misbehaving (Linux on Apple hardware thread went to the front page of MacNN).

I've requested that flogging is carried out.

This was interesting. I heard they managed to exploit a load of poorly configured DNS servers which they sent requests that were crafted to A) send back a huge number of results per request, and B) were sending those return results to Spamhaus to create a DoS attack that took big chunks of the net with it.

Clever stuff.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Excellent article. I've neglected Gizmodo ever since they changed their interface. I shall try and start reading it again.

I guess this is related but not related: Three Crazy James Bond Villains Were Caught Trying to Cut Through The Internet's Undersea Cables

So far, there's no explanation for what the divers' nefarious plan was, but it's possible they also had something to do with previously unexplained disruptions to undersea cables serving Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia over the past several days. So worry all you want about DDoS attacks, but there are physical targets for Internet attacks as well. You just have to be sort of a James Bond-style villian to get to them.
