Say I have 3 Macs in my home. Do I have to buy the family pack SL DVD? Say I have 6 Macs in my home, would Apple know that I was supposed to buy the family pack?

I don't get it..

There's no copy protections or network check if that's what you're asking. Apple doesn't treat their customers like criminals. That said, it's $50 for the family pack. Suck it up and buy it. You won't be violating the license agreement and Apple gets the value for the work they did.

I have 3 Intel Macs to update, so I got the Family Pack. Not only is it the "right" thing to do, it's very affordable.

Apple trusts you will buy the appropriate number of copies of the OS. It's your prerogative to honor that trust.

Say a clerk gives you $20 extra in change. Do you have to give it back?

Same question.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Yonkers can have better TV reception.

Me personally? Yes, I DO "have to" give it back. that extra $20 would come out of the clerk's pay. I'd turn it into a teaching moment (I LOVE teaching "counting back change"), but I would not sleep if I had not given it back.

As for the analogy you try to set up here, it's flawed. Scale has nothing to do with "what is right." Cheating is cheating, whether you're cheating a minimum-wage clerk or the largest of corporations. While many Microsoft OS users have sort of made a game of avoiding license requirements, that doesn't make their actions right.

Absolutely!

But, buying a family pack for 2-3 same household comps seems (I don't know..) illogical.

BTW, is the Family pack DVD the exact same (data-wise) as the Single one?

There's the single license version and the 5 license version. You have more than one computer so you need to buy the 5 license version. Nothing illogical about that and frankly, is downright obvious.

Family pack is what, $45 on sale? That's not exactly a king's ransom. And I'm a serious cheapskate.

I think so. But, so what?

Yeah, strictly tongue-in-cheek. The dollar amounts are closer than the entities potentially being ripped off.
