It figures Shadowmatic would be free a few weeks after I buy it. Great, and very challenging, game.

I was looking seriously at grabbing that app, but then I read a bunch of the reviews. Overall, it sounds like a really great app, but it also sounds like the developer plays some douchey games with the updates. Flip a coin, I guess...

A FAotW for something with no in-app purchases is usually a signal of a new version on the horizon. If one is, and they pull that, after this week they'll have greatly enlarged the pool of potential unhappy campers.

To me, ANY effective PDF tool for my iPad is worth looking at. If they get "douchy" with updates, etc., I can just abandon the app and I'm not out anything.

Sorry... kind of a rough week, so I never got around to the iPad link. I'll be more on top of things this go-round.

As of this moment, I see no AotW in the store. That's never happened since I've been doing this.
I'll keep checking.

Sorry I've been slow the last couple weeks... RL intrudes. Damn Gersberms.
App Store - Lifeline
This redirect is broken for me on mobile Safari, but the link is legit, and functions properly if you cut and paste.

I grabbed Lifeline a couple days ago. It's an update to the text-based adventure genre. The game lets you back-up to any point and take a different direction than the one you originally took that ended in death. One nit to pick is the writing of the character you interact with. I find myself thinking about which decision to make that will kill him off quickly. And then backing up and killing him again. So, y'know, fun times.
Oh, and, if you pick this up, for all that is holy, turn off notifications for it. Trust me on this.

Since I started the thread, I played Monsters Ate My Condo for five minutes, used Kayak once, and was prompted by andi to goof around with the Panorama app. That's it.
Honestly, I get more out of providing the "service" of the weekly updates than I do out of the apps themselves.
One day, I'll play Monument Valley.

App Store - Warhammer 40,000: Deathwatch - Tyranid Invasion
I love the crap out of this game, and have played it for a bajillion hours.
Here's my commentary on the IAP.
Consider the game without IAP as a demo. If you like it, drop $20 on random loot. This is plenty for 2/3 of the game. That's playing all the missions twice. Do this as soon as you've decided you want to play through it. You really don't want to wait.
If you decide you want to tackle the last third of the game (which is the same missions you've already done twice at a harder difficulty), it's probably worth it to drop another $20.
If you're super into it, and want to field a bunch of different teams, you'll end up spending between $20 and $60 more.
Their IAP model got slagged, but I think it's well designed. The amount you end up paying matches well with the playtime and enjoyment you get out of it. People who pay $20 get the equivalent of a budget console title. You only want to pay more if you're getting a AAA experience out of it, which for this game means replaying the same scenarios over and over. It doesn't trick you into paying just so you can decide if you like it. You're only benefitted by paying if you know you want to play a lot.

As someone who has played Clash of Clans for over a year without giving in to IAP... in that game, using IAP always seems like cheating. Like, a new update will happen with new weapons/etc and some people will suddenly have that item maxed, and you know they just bought a billion gems. Jerk gem-buyers. Takes some of the skill out of it. Also probably a lot of the tedium, but anyhow...
Are Warhammer IAP like that?

Absolutely not!
In simplest terms, better gear and characters only help if you play the game a long time.
There's not a whole lot of difference between a top tier character and a bottom tier character until you've leveled them a whole bunch (i.e. played with that character for hours and hours).
Similarly, a top tier weapon will function poorly unless it's equipped by a leveled up character. If you draw the best weapon on day one, it sits in your inventory unused for half the game.
The system is elegant and almost perfectly balanced, but has one basic flaw. Once you get a high tier character, you don't want to spend effort leveling a low tier one, and if you've already spent hours doing so, you'll kinda feel like you wasted a lot of time. This is why I say "if you like it, drop $20 ASAP". That will almost assuredly net you a couple top tier characters to form the core of your team.
The game is unquestionably worth $20. It's brilliantly designed, has stunning graphics, and plays for hours on end.

Here's the breakdown. This is approximate, since random loot is involved, but it's how things were for me.
$0 ($5 normally) is "demo mode".
$20 will make half your team top tier characters.
$40 will make your whole team top tier characters.
$60 will make your whole team top tier characters of the same play-style.
$80 will get you two whole teams of top tier characters, each team with a different play style.
$100 will get you three top tier teams, which is everything the game has to offer.
The $20 level is plenty to play through the whole game twice. Once on easy mode, and once on hard mode.
The $40 level is enough to play through a third time on extra hard mode, and then you've officially finished the game. You could probably get by with having only spent $20, but it's going to be more difficult, and extra hard mode is difficult to begin with.
As I said, you've finished the game at this point. Spending more is only for people who still want to keep playing it over and over in order to explore the different tactical options.
The amount you pay scales linearly with how much you want to play it, which is presumably based on how much enjoyment you're having. Personally, I think it's a brilliant piece of IAP design... which is why I can't stop talking about it.
