I've decided to switch. But, now I have a couple of questions.
I'm pretty sure that I'd like the 12" powerbook, but I'm wondering if there is any way to read memory cards (compact flash and secure digital) without something attached to it. Is there some way to internally add a reader?

Not without hacking your powerbook. However, you can by a pc card that can read multiple memory card formats for cheap (like I did)... I own a four-in-one adapter for my powerbook, but I've heard of 9-in-one card readers.

Yet the 12" has no PC slot. It'd have to be USB.

Won't work because the 12" doesn't have a PC card slot.

So, do any of the others have a pc slot?
I'm mainly wanting to download tons of pics if I'm shooting something onsite. Is the only way to have the dangly sucker?

I carry one of these puppies around with me, together with a short cable.
When I'm uploading from my camera to my laptop though I just connect directly with the cable. Saves having to take the card out, and a cable is about as small and portable as it comes, it just hides in a pocket of my camera bag.
Another option would be bluetooth, of course, if you have a camera that supports it.

Alternatively, see it as an excuse to buy one of these.

I may have to do the first. I can't use the shuffle because I'll have about 8gb worth of cards to transfer.

Yes, both the 15" and 17" models do.

Yeah, sorry, I read your subsequent post after I'd submitted and went back to edit mine.

Just out of interest, what is wrong with simply using the USB or whatever cable that comes with the camera to download direct? Is it a battery life (on the camera) issue?

I bought one of these so I could transfer photo's at USB 2.0 speeds, rather than being stuck at the USB 1.1 speeds that my camera supports.

I've found it excellent so far. It has a little USB plug that tucks into the side of the casing, it's small, light, feels relatively sturdy, and comes with a USB extension lead.
