Is there much of a performance difference between the Seagate HD with an 8 mb cache vs. the Toshiba with a 16 mb cache? The stock 60 gb HD in my 17" powerbook is way too slow and has got to go. Would love a 7200 rpm 100 gb drives but can't wait any longer for them to come out.

Well AFAIK 160GB 7200 RPM drives are up on plate shortly, I would try to wait if you can.

If you can't the denser the better in terms of speed, your 60GB is pretty loose, a 100GB drive even of the same specs would be noticeably faster. The Cache does help, though I doubt the difference in the 8 vs 16 is huge, you would be best to look up benchmarks of each model and decide form there.

The difference in cache is neligible most of the time.

On the other hand, Seagate offers a 5 year warranty while Toshiba only offers 3 (which is still better than many makers' lousy 1 year warranty).

Seagate is supposed to be shipping 120 GB 5400 rpm notebook drives.

I went from a 60 GB 7200 rpm drive to a 100 GB 5400 rpm drive and have a faster machine because I was always having to delete files to keep 5 GB free...

Thanks, I was thinking about buying the Seagate, just wanted to make sure the cache size isn't a significant factor.

Do you know where I can get one? I've been trying to find the 100 gb 7200 and 120 gb 5400 online but have had no success.

I just had my 12" Rev B upgraded to the Seagate Momentus 100GB HD from PowerBookResQ.com and thus far it is great!

I'd go for the Seagate, but more because I love the company than anything else. Their stuff is always quiet and reliable. Their warranties are better. They're one of the only companies to make genuine SATA hard drives, and they seem to be the only ones innovating in the notebook sector (they just released a 160 GB drive, the first with perpendicular recording). Over the next few years the industry will most likely be following them.

So go with a Seagate drive. As always, shop around for a good deal. You can usually find one at www.newegg.com.

Actually, Best Buy is having a sale right now for the Seagate Momentus 100GB 5400rpm. It's $170. Same price as NewEgg essentially, but the difference is you can pick it up in a jiffy.
