According to this XLR8 FAQ you can flash your G5's DVR-109 with the latest and greatest firmware. Has anyone tried this? Is it safe? Will it disable use of some Apple software like iDVD?

I just flashed my Pioneer DVR-109 drive to the latest 1.57 firmware. No issues whatsoever. It still works with all iLife apps. If you read the release notes for the firmware, it says that it improves burning with media.

The flash went well and the drive works perfectly but now I can't burn with iDVD or iMovie HD. I suppose I will wait until Patchburn4 has and iDVD5 support option.

You shouldn't need patchburn as the drive is supported natively. You might need to reinstall.

I believe the DVR-109 is only supported natively under OS X 10.4. If you're running an earlier version you'll need Patchburn.

I have a stock DVR-109 in a brand new G5 DP 2.3. I flashed it with 1.57 from A912 and the status switched from Apple Shipped to 'Yes but Unsupported'. Now when I go to burn something in iDVD it says:

I guess you can only burn with iApps if you have the stock A912 firmware in place.

I have a DVR 109 in an external firewire case. Firmware 1.50. It's not supported in 10.4.2.

I have a DVR-109 (Flashed to 1.50) I installed into my quicksilver also running 10.4.2 and it never said Apple/Shipped but only says Yes but Unsupported. My iApps worked fine with it, iTunes, iDVD ect, but I found that the finder desktop burning feature said it was incompatable drive. I installed patchburn and now the profiler says: Yes (Vendor Supported) and everything works like a charm. Still all my iApps work with it, and then the finder desktop burning reconizes the drive and works just fine again.
