Take a look at the new preview pages on Apple's Tiger page.

I thought they were going in a nice direction with the smooth gradient white windows, and then they add those horrible new icons to Mail.app! I hope it won't be written into the guidelines that apps' toolbar icons have these weird backgrounds now.

Yeah, those buttons on Mail in Tiger are not great. Real clunky-looking. Let's hope they see the light on that.

I think they look fine; less jarring than the floaty icons of yore.

They'll probably be fixed up before release, anyhow.

Oh, and you can always customize shit like this quite easily.

I really hope for the sake of my neighbors and random drivers that they change those buttons before the big day...

Haven't been paying too much attention to Tiger screenshots but mail icons look fine to me...but who knows, there is still time to refine them before Tiger goes GM. I will say that Dashboard looks 300% better now than it did back at the Developer's Conference. It actually looks like something I would use.

Yeah those buttons look like crap. Original Aqua (Panther) and Brushed also don't really fit with the new Plastic-like look (Mail, Spotlight, Menubar)

I'm not sure about that Spotlight menuextra, it would be fine once coloured grey though.

But Apple still don't seem to have decided about this new white appearance. It's in Mail, Spotlight, System Prefs - is that it? What's the connection here? Personally I would like a toggle of brushed metal or this white appearance. And none of those weird new icons.

Well, you're decidedly in the minority, mrjingles. The sidebar looks fine, but those buttons look like some sort of amateurish Netscape 4 throwback. It certainly isn't anywhere near the quality of previous efforts.

The last build of Tiger had the coolest Mail.app setup... I was hoping the entire GUI for Tiger would adopt that look from Mail. The latest mail.app from the expo looks like poop! Worse than friggin 10.0! What happened?! Did Apple hire some designers from Microsoft???

What happens if you insert a space between the icons? Do they turn into single rounded buttons? Also, is there still a small size button that scales it down even further? I think they should have just left them alone.

Honestly, if Apple whipped out an OS that looked like Windows XP, would you not be a little disappointed?

The only thing worse than people who whine too much is people that whine about people that whine too much.

If people like us didn't complain Apple would realise that nobody cared about the interface and go the Microsoft route of just designing any old piece of rubbish.

Doubtful, I don't think Apple would force someone to have all three of those in that order. It's not the same thing as a back/forward set of buttons.

you know very well osx will not look like windows, ever, period. but there'll always be people who for some reason feel offended by apple changing the look of their buttons ... why?

ummmm, i have news for you - apple does not give a rats ass about how you feel about their gui, as long as people are buying it. and more and more people are buying these days. so i think they are doing something right. people here for some reason feel like apple owes them something and take it very personal when apple makes changes they don't aprove of.

Offended? I can't speak for every GUI freak, but I'm not "offended"... "A tiny bit disappointed" would better describe it.

I don't feel Apple owes me anything... If I see something I like, like Mail.app in the last build of Tiger, I will praise it to no end... when something like that changes to something I see as aesthetically disappointing, I'll comment on it.

Calm down... it's a GUI forum after all.

I'm not too keen on those buttons, but then I was never keen on the Panther buttons either.

I think that the Mail toolbar buttons should be based on the Finder toolbar buttons, ie sunken Aqua - then they'd match the new plastic look too.

Well being the self proclaimed "techie" that you are, you clearly don't understand it at all. Might just seem like a minor tool bar style change to you that wont affect anything but to people who actually know about these things then a slight change like this from apple basically opens the door for the slap dash UI design that you have to suffer on windows where basically every application released has a totally new interface that behaves totally different from anything else on the platform. Just look at microsoft office none of its menus or anything behave like a regular windows app its ridiculous. Though the idea behind osx was to escape the days in os9 when everyone made custom controls to suit their needs.

I agree - perhaps Apple has something else up their sleeves, interface wise, that they didn't want to show quite yet. The current Mail icons look clunky, and that could be because they rushed something together to replace what they will look like when released.

They'd better change. The Tiger Mail toolbar looks like crap. Who on earth thought those mysterious arrows would be better than clearly labelled icons for reply, forward, reply all, etc.?
