We all know that Mac gaming is a bit of a niche in the market, but some gems manage to make their way through regardless.

Personally, I'm tired of all the first person shooters, however. While other games do emerge, this genre seems to be predominant. This is usually because the 3D engine is easy to port.

I, for one, would love to see more sports games emerge. I'm talking along the lines of EA's NHL and NFL series. being a Hockey fan, I would love to see NHL 200# ported. I can't imagine that the graphics would be more of a strain on a PowerBook (for example) than Halo is, and in the end I think it would be a great game.

So what would you like to see most?

Well, there seem to be far too many, um, generic 'cookie-cutter' 3D titles these days, IMO (it's like game designers seem to be forgetting that 2D is a format, and not a technical limitation), so I'd like to see some old-school-style 2D games in the vein of Super Mario Bros., Mega Man & Bass, The Legend of Zelda, Super Metroid and suchlike. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (wow, that's going back some way) was great, and I think there's great potential for other games like it (I always found the online and LAN multiplayer to be a blast in that title).

That, and anything offbeat and fun - perhaps something like the old PSX dancing title Bust-a-Groove (that was a riot).

You definitely have to try Viewtiful Joe GC.

Oh, be on the lookout for Paper Mario 2 GC

I'm pretty sure sports games have sold pretty lousy on the Mac, so I doubt you'll be getting any of them on our platform. Why not get a console for sports games?

What is REALLY lacking on the Mac is combat flight sims, like the current king of PC sims, il2 Stormovik.

http://www.il2sturmovik.com/download/screenshots.php

This flight sim has become the new standard of combat flight sims, from the reviews I've read. If any developers read this, PLEASE consider this awesome game for our platform!

I would also love to have Halflife 2 for the Mac too.

I still need to pick up VJ. Can't wait for Paper Mario 2, either. I'd love to see some games along those lines for the Mac, too, TBH. ^^;; (It'd be nice if Capcom would develop some Mac stuff, but they killed off their PC game studio recently, so there's no chance of a Mac team now, I'd imagine.)

Sundog (X2 looks promising, tho)
Mech type games (Anyone know anything about Dark Horizons: Lore?)
Morrowind or some suitably extremely huge and nonlinear rpg.
A nice high quality 2D platformer.

My biggest gripe about games on the Mac is the inevitable year or two delay between the PC release and the Mac release.

That'd be way cool.

I hope we get Halo 2, no matter the politics that have gone on behind the whole thing. I just love Bungie games (but refuse point blank to get an xbox).

There is this cool game reviewed over on Ars right now called "hitman:Contracts". Right up my alley

Strange but true: A good chunk of IL2 Sturmovik is written Java.

Given the relative sloth of Apple's JVM, though, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing for porting.

(not to mention - I think the game requires the Microsoft JVM, not the Sun JVM).

Amazing! Since the MS JVM is outdated, unsupported and a complete hack!

How incredibly ****ing stupid can game developers be???????????

Apple's JVM is not slow. It's just the AWT window drawing code that's slow. The JVM itself is pretty fast.

Some parts of the JVM may be fast. I sure haven't encountered them though, and my day job is to write software for it.

Like you said, anything UI-related is glacially slow, especially the Aqua look-and-feel.

That's not all though:
Long arithmetic is slow
Floating-point arithmetic is slow
Both network and file I/O are slow
Memory access seems to be quite slow, although I haven't benchmarked it
Did I mention that normal drawing operations like Graphics.drawString() are abysmally slow?

Well as long we're talkin' hypothetical I'd love Kingdom Hearts for the mac. I don't know why, but I think Kingdom hearts would make for a really good MMORPG. I realize it wouldn't work because it's not turn based but I think square could pull it off really well.

How incredibly stupid can any developer be to use Java. All Java apps I have ever used have non-standard interfaces, are slow to launch, slow to work with, slow to quit, and are bloated to download. The fact that a bunch of universities teach it pisses me off more, because then we get more developers who produce more crappy looking, crappy working, crappy performing apps.

The only gaming I do on my iBook is SNES9X (Super Nintendo emulator). Everything else doesn't like my iBook. I play the heavy games, UT03/04, Battlefield 1942/Vietnam, Star Wars Gallaxies (not so much now this game is pi**ing me off), Halo, Madden 2004, Rise of Nations, and others on my PC.

I would like to see the Mac get more games that are on par with their PC counterparts.

Any decent WW II off line Flightsimulator would be fantastic. The last good one for the mac was Hellcats in 1992. Microsoft alone has released 3 or 4 since then and then there are several others as well for the PC.

Far Cry

It's a great game, like a bit of Deus Ex goodness combined with what Halo should have been with graphics that beat Half-Life 2 (ok almost), atleast in the release date dept.

It looks and feels amazingly great... see this non-scripted AI demo (.wmv) for an idea.

The levels are lush and large and the multi-player is really promising.

Hamster Ball

Fun and very well done Marble Madness lookalike. Works surprisingly well with a mouse, they've gotten it right. Lots of levels with neat touches, too.

I was just sitting here feeling all nostalgic and everything, and thought about another old time game that would be wonderful to see come back: The Sentinel.

Remember it? Tower that spins around, and you've got to absorb its energy. Played on a 3D quasi-terrain, and you absorbed trees and rocks, and made duplicates of yourself and transported around avioding the gaze of the sentinel until you had put yourself in a position to absorb it? Anyone?

It'd be fun to play the exact same game, as it was truely a classic design. Just updated with nifty texture mapping. Trust me. It'd be great.

Man. I could start a whole list of old school games I'd love to see. Sundog, M.U.L.E., the Sentinel, Pensate, Worms (the EA version), 7 Cities of Gold...

I've heard of the game, but never played it. I do know that a remake was produced in 1998, for the PSX, though - http://psx.mobygames.com/game/sheet/gameId,2135/ - by the name of 'Sentinel Returns'.

We usually get the best selling games, and yet we haven't gotten gta3 or gta4, what's that all about? Those of us who don't have PCs or Playstations or XBoxes but just GameCubes and Macs are left without GTA.

I've given up hope on this one. Maybe, someday in the future, when Bethesda releases the next in the Elder Scrolls series (The Elder Scrolls IV), Bethesda will work with a Mac developer and get it out on the Mac.
