My post disappeared! one more time....

My wife and I were fiddling with the watch, can't find a way to adjust the screen activation time, nor the amount of time the screen stays on. hmm.

There is not, and that seems to be one of the most common complaints.

The screen switch-off is too aggressive, especially given that the battery performs better than expected. I suspect that Apple tried to err on the side of caution there and overstepped the mark.

When Apple's "we'll handle that for you" approach works, it works amazingly well.

It's the first iterations that are painful. I suspect they'll get this just right in time, which is what I assume about every aspect of the Apple Watch.

Yes, after some googling it became all too apparent.
Seems like an obvious need though.

I don't know, knowing apple it probably never occurred to them that someone would want to change this

It needs a viable always-on option, but I imagine that's tough with LCD tech (OLEDs do this well due to lower power consumption).

Apple Watch is OLED.

(That's why it's always white-on-black: black backgrounds require the least energy, contrary to LEDs, where black is the most energy-intensive color.)

Put the Apple logo on your watch face, instructions from Chewbacca...How to add Apple's logo to your Apple Watch clock face

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

*looks more closely at Watch*

I can't really tell, it looks so LCD-like I thought it was one, the colors don't "pop" as much, and the black levels don't seem as deep, as others. That aside, there's really no reason they can't implement a lower-powered always-on mode, then. Android Wear has had that since its inception, while still allowing solid battery life (2+ days). This could be a deal breaker for me, I thought I could adjust to not being able to glance at the Watch to read the time, but it's starting to annoy me.

So wait... your saying you can't just twist your wrist and glance at the watch to see what time it is?

Nope, it's blank until you give it a good wrist flick (which usually works, but not every time), twisting sometimes isn't enough, and just glancing (like if the face is already in front of you) doesn't get you anything unless you flick or tap the thing. To me it's a rather large hole in its usability, and I'm not sure I want to look like a Tourette's sufferer just so I can read the time. Also streaming apps and data from the iphone is slow as hell.

Either this is Android-bias bullshit or you have a defective watch. I don't have this problem.

Flip wrist - display turns on. Any questions?

No questions, it just doesn't always work (I'm not the only person who's noticed this), and sometimes the watch is in front of me and I don't want to have to flick my wrist to make it come on. Whereas on my Android Wear watches I can always see the time, date, charge, and several other indicators, depending on the face I choose. Not always showing the time is a usability hole, no other way to say it. Having a hissy over it doesn't change anything.

Just wait. The Apple Watch 2 or 3 will have a great new feature: ALWAYS showing the time.

It will be sold as the best thing since sliced bread.

Yeah, let's all just STFU, never disagree, never even converse at all, MacNN would be great if no one ever posted anything. Right? (It's not far from that now.) If there was nothing but universal consensus and a blank forum to greet you when you check the Lounge each day? How did you survive during the site's "glory days" when 50 arguments were going on at once, back before the people with stronger personalities (like Ca$h, Kilbey, Doofy, Spliffdaddy, and SWG) either quit this place or were banned outright? This isn't Tumblr, or even Reddit, we aren't trying to digitally murder each other, there's no blood on the floor. Hell, we aren't even getting truly upset. "Can't you all just get along?!" Where's the entertainment in that? Seriously, WTH do you want?

I take no issue with your opinions. I'm not starman.

I take issue with how you choose to defend them - or rather, yourself.

Ca$h and the others weren't banned for having strong opinions. They were banned for being total assholes about them.

It's one thing to have opinions. That's fine. But crapping on people and saying "bleh bleh Android is better" on a Mac forum, well, you come off as a jerk.

Mind you, you come off like a yapping puppy dog taking every chance to nip at his ankles.

I'd be kicking you too, by now.

This place is first and foremost a TECH forum. Discussing the merits of Apple hardware does include comparing it to others'. You need to hit the "MacBook returns" thread stante pede! — somebody just mentioned that he liked that some Chromebook comes with two USB-C ports, despite just being a glorified hardware web browser.

See, you're so incredibly blind you can't see that I do give Apple kudos, when they deserve them, but you only ever see negative comments (and I've never said that Android is just outright better, unlike you shitting on it at any opportunity). If you can't handle someone giving a frank, neutral assessment of Apple, then that's just too bad. Because I'm not changing.

Yes they were, and there's nothing wrong with being an asshole sometimes. If those "assholes" hadn't left (or been run off), the site traffic here wouldn't have spiraled down the crapper. Would you seriously rather have silence over strong opinions? Because I think that's pretty screwed up, especially for an OT discussion forum.

Like I said: I'm fine with strong opinions.

I'm NOT okay with bullying and harrassing. Which is you two guys all over this thread.

Nobody gets banned for being an asshole sometimes. They get warned after a streak (and lots of us have had such streaks), but if they persist...

@Cap'n Tightpants, starman, Spheric
Please don't let this discussion devolve into a slugfest. Behaving like an asshole in here is definitely not acceptable, even if you think it has some sort of entertainment value to some. Keep it civil and stay on topic.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

That's part of the issue, I don't consider it bullying or harassment until the real life threats and doxxing starts, until then it's just disagreement. Fortunately, around here we only have a couple of members who like to try and use those tactics and it isn't tolerated.

It's just a personal opinion, but an anonymous persona is an insulating layer of protection from real life threats, and even though some comments may possibly hurt your feelings, they aren't directly harming you.

But hostility and bickering make the experience less enjoyable for everyone.

The truth is that controversy and disagreement is what fuels message boards and makes them fun, but it's a fine line to walk. Too safe and it's just boring and lame and too wild west and it gets to be annoying as well.

That's the thing, whenever two people start to disagree or bicker now, invariably someone else comes along to piss and moan about it, like a bunch of crotchety "get off my lawn" geezers.

starman's responses haven't been stellar either.

I'm not really taking anyone's side in this, but the personal back-and-forth attacks aren't enhancing the conversation. It's okay for us all to disagree, but I'd rather disagree about the merits of the watch.

Yeah, I'm starting to reach the "give it to the nephew" stage of my relationship with the Watch, aside from the cool Tesla integration (which is a little hinky) I'm just not feeling much love for it, and I hate to just throw it in a drawer, like I did with my Pebble.

Thinking that the Apple watch is anything more than a watch with benefits is setting yourself up for disappointment. It works best, when it does very little.

This entire section of tech will get far more interesting when the watch doesn't need the phone anymore.

That's kind of the key to the whole thing, isn't it?

Well, when it doesn't work as well as a regular watch in some instances, it kind of falls on its face.

Seems to me like one should only buy an Apple Watch if one likes the design enough to wear and use it primarily as a REGULAR watch.

It has the added bonus of some newfangled features, but those alone are not worth the high price compared to a dumb watch for $100-200 that looks nice as well.

Both watches I wear regularly fail to work completely in the dark.

The Apple Watch is a better watch in that regard.

Yes, nice theory.

In practice, I rarely check the time in complete darkness.
In those few instances each year, I consult my cell phone

Yeah, it really seems like the best way to approach this thing is to think of it as a cool watch that does some extra stuff rather than some sort of revolutionary new life changing device.

How does that reaction to the Watch compare to your experience with other first-gen Apple products (iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, MBA, etc)?
