I remember someone once posted a pic of the Chess.app floating over the desktop with no window borders (like a 3D object). Is this still possible?

Yeah but they disabled that in final build of 10.3 for some reason.
It was pretty amazing

Hard to say. I never used them. Must be somewhere in the 70s or 80s (build numbers) if I recall what people were saying on the board.

Yeah, it was in the majority of the dev builds I used. Anyhow, it wasn't as cool as you think. The window was still 'there', for instance: where the window wouldn't show you all of the board (i.e. cut the left and right corners off when viewing diagonally), it would do the same in 'windowless' mode.
