I'm trying to free up space to install iOS 8 and I have over a gig in Moments. I go through all the steps to select them, and the trash icon on the bottom right is greyed out. It's annoying because there are photos there that a) don't need to be there and b) have been deleted from my camera roll and my photo stream a long time ago.
So it seems photos are stored in three locations: camera roll, photo stream, and moments. I've deleted the first two but the third will not let me delete them. It would be nice to reclaim that 1.2 GB of space on my poor 16 GB iPhone 5.

Are you sure about this? I always thought Moments were like Events, just collections of existing photos, not duplicates.
Is there a reason why you can't use iTunes to update to avoid having to free up space on the phone?

Yeah. All other photos were gone except those. I ended up using iExplorer to get into the file system to manually delete them.
iTunes was having issues connecting at the time, but software update through the phone wasn't, so I went that route. I needed to free up space anyhow.
