November 15th, 2004 - Delicious Monster and MacThemes.net are pleased to announce a design contest to promote Delicious Monster's debut application, Delicious Library. Artists can design and submit shelf themes from November 15th through November 22nd, replacing Library's wooden shelves with modern or quirky alternatives.
The three winners will be selected by a combination of reader and panel votes, and receive almost $400 worth of prizes, including free copies of Delicious Library. The first place winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to use at Amazon.com to stock their library, a wireless bluetooth barcode scanner (valued at $175), and a copy of Delicious Library. The second place winner will receive a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate and a copy of Delicious Library. The third place winner will receive a copy of Delicious Library.
All theme submissions will be available on MacThemes.net for users to try out. There will be a one week voting period beginning November 23rd, and winners will be announced on the 30th.
Visitors interested in entering the contest can download the submission package on the contest site.

Looks interesting. For a second I was thinking "GUI kit in one week?"
I'm not sure I should enter. Really don't have much experience with this sorta stuff, but I guess it's worth a shot.
Now, if only I could find one of those ideas.

Got my submission in already. I had thought about making my own for a little bit anyways, this just gave me an excuse.

If anyone is good with GUI stuff, can you PM me? I want to get an opinion on my design without posting it here.

Do we only send in the included resources? Can we mod the recent items resources, too?
Y'know, for extra credit.

You can, but the preview will only show the included resources. However, we'll be having all entries up for download, so users could potentially install your extra modded resources.

Sweet. I'll get working on that.
So, how many people do you think will enter the comp? Y'know, just a guess so I know how good mine will have to beor less bad relatively.
[Why did Matas leave the colors from the clumped grain filter on the tiff for the recently viewed background?]

No idea on the colors.
About how many people will enter, considering the relatively few elements to design compared to the full theme mockups of our previous contest (which had 41 entries I believe), but also the shorter time to enter... I'd be expecting a similar number of entries if not more to our last contest.
That having been said, competition -will- be pretty tough from what I've seen so far, so give your design that extra layer of polish Also, you might want to consider doing something different from other wood/metal designs, because there's obviously going to be many of them.

I think mine sucks. I'm just entering for the Hell of it. I'll probably ask someone to give me some critiques, but I don't want to put it up on the thread.
Don't expect anything good.
BTW, I am doing metal but it is nothing like the "Md Gray to Md White, back to gray" process that's used it alot of metal themes. But it still sucks.

My submitted theme was a metal theme, but I didn't know you could modify the Recent Items as well... Sunovabich.
I've got another idea, though. Would it be possible to submit more than one? If not, could I submit another to take the place of my previous one?

You can only officially enter one to the contest, but sure, replacing your old entry is fine. Just send it over.

Because that is what that kind of metal looks like. It reflects light in rainbow colors.

But is looks a little too strong.
maybe a saturation decrease by 10-20 would look better, but hey, I'm not the guy getting paid to design apps.

Give me an hour. I'm still working on some alternative textures.
I'll put it up on my .Mac and send you a link. But it'd probably better if you downloaded the app and put the tiffs in the rsrc folder, instead of justing opening them.
[Edit] Oh yeah, Phil, can I get your opinion on mine tomorrow afternoon? No criticisms or anything, just look.

Sure, send it over.
I'm sorry about my email, I never expected it. It turns out I had 'delete from server after downloading' unchecked, which meant my inbox pretty quickly reached the 100meg limit.
I'll have to post something about that

It'll be a couple hours. I'm still having a couple problems. Those damn shadows make everything look weird. It looks messed up. Those label shadows are annoying.
BTW, would sending it to you to look at automatically count as a submission? Can the contact info be an RTFD?

I'm not quite sure what you mean about the RTFD. You mean including images? I guess, though I can't guarantee it'd be posted.
Sending it to me will count, but you can always send newer versions to me before the deadline, so it's not a big deal.

But does that mean I can get a "it's good" or "you should be punished for this" comment? Fireside said it was good, so I'm not sure what you'd say.

Hmm... could someone give me a little inspiration or an idea what to create? Maybe an H.R. Giger styled look?

Uhh, Giger would be amazing. Good luck making it though. But if it turned out well, I'd love it I'm sure.
If Fireside liked it, it MUST've been amazing. Send it over.

Must be a very popular contest. My 11th hour entry hit a full mailbox.

Then again, I have a snowball's chance in hell for this contest. Oh well, it was still fun. Alot of classy ones, surprisingly.
Here's what mine looked like
Good luck all.

Rather nice, but not my style. I went for a lighter option. Mine is listed as Growl in the image directory, and Blue in the zip directory.

Currently, there are 6 themes that are freakn awesome. Not including my mediocre one.
I'm not telling which, but I'd like to get a better view of some of them.
Come on phil, let's see em!

Since we're only allowed one entry each I'm posting my designs that didn't make the cut.
Hippy Pad. This shelf theme recreates the feel of a seventies hippy pad.
Jazz up your digital squat, my brother! Store your books on meditation and groovy sitar albums on 100% recycled shelving made from freaky cinder blocks and planks. Each shelf is lovingly labelled with a pure hemp rolling paper.
Far out, man.
Preview.
Download.
G5 Shelves. Theme based on the G5 case.
Preview.
Download.
SystemX. Theme based on the Virginia Tech supercomputer 'System X'.
Harness the power of all these XServe G5s to organise your media collection.
Preview.
Download.
UnityDL-1. This is a theme to match the UnityGK-1 GuiKit that is currently in production.
Preview.
Download.
You can view (and vote for ) my final entry here.
Enjoy!

I'm going to start the voting in less than an hour, though it'll probably be missing about the last 7 entries that came in (Mike needs to send me preview images for them). However, most of them were late, so I'll post them about a day late. I hope that'll be OK with the artists.
So hang tight to vote. And grr, I really have to learn to stick index.html files in those directories.

I assume they're not posted, instead of just missing the download. Gotcha.
[Holds his breath. Why did I use my real name in the info? Shoulda kept my alias.]
Edit: Ouch! I'm getting hammered in the voting. 49%? I'm getting scores like the G5-based shelves.

Just a friendly warning: Clicking the link in Tick's sig will not just open his contest entry's page, but automatically give it the highest rating. Just in case you wanted to make up your own minds.

Everyone, don't worry about the scores. I'll weight them by subtracting the highest rating from a hundred, then adding that to all entries. Then of course, the panel will have some say (our scores will be averaged with the reader votes for the final score).

I think the panelists should have 75% of the sway here. Mob rule sucks.
Since the panelists are people who know GUI and interface making like the back of their hand, I think they are much more knowledgeable than the average schmucklike me. Thus, they should not be equal, but the panelists should have a very large sway. The 25%, the voters, would basically break the ties. Because, honestly, some of those themes don't deserve their scores at all. I'm not gonna win, but I think a republic is better than a democracy. Besides, we all know how popularity contests work.
I might add that I hate everything Ikea makes, but the theme looks . If I don't win, I hope that ones places very high. The background needs work, but the lights look terrific.
Did the panelists vote already?
