Could be software. Boot from another disk and test.
Otherwise it could be a faulty Left I/O board. Worth checking the headphone jack for any obstructions or damage.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

plugged an un plugged earphones several times and everything went back to normal so i suspect there was some obstruction as you suggested, thanks for the tip
