Also, a couple of other suggestions as essential utilities:

MacJanitor (esp for i/PowerBook owners) for manually running the system crontab that clears the system.log file etc.

Cronnix for much the same reason (its a GUI app for altering crontabs, including the system crontab which enables you to re-schedule the times for the daily/weekly/monthly tasks to more sensible times).

Why would anyone need an extra app to refresh the date in the iCal Dock graphics ? It does it by itself. I started iCal at around 10pm and when midnight came closer and the hour turned to midnight and then some- I noticed that it changed by itself. OMG WOW.

Atleast it does this with the latest versions of iCal and Panther. Can't tell if it does it on Jaquar aswell.

If open, it does. I don't always use iCal. Some days I don't use it, but when I had it in my dock (I use F10 now), I liked having the current date without having to open and close iCal.

ChronoSync (simple, VERY effective file/folder synchronization utility, with background scheduling support)

You Synchronize (same functionality, slower than ChronoSync, but can be more accurate due to use of checksums instead of file dates)

Another vote here for Goliath, it's the only WebDAV program that I'm aware of for X and works great for uploading files.
Also for simple HTML editing nothing beats Taco HTML.

I have found that thee best video player for me is MPlayer. It plays all Quicktime and many other codecs (wmv, avi, and more). If there is any other video player that can do all that MPlayer does and more please let me know. I have found that MPlayer does have some trouble playing .wmv files occasionally. Minor bug though.

Hyjack mplayer or whatever you are using and mess around with the effects. I can't remember exactly what to do (I just got a new DVD player), but it's there. No longer will you be jumping up from the sofa to turn down the incredibly loud bits.

That's not really accurate. Open Source alternatives like MPlayer don't support the latest Windows Media codecs, they don't support QT features like QTVR, interactive sprites, chapters, reference movies, copy protected content, text tracks, QT frame-accurate editing or navigation, or more obscure codecs like indeo or 3ivx d3. Open source media players are a supplement to corporate ones, not a replacement. Furthermore WMP and QT (or apps that use it to provide the same or more features than MPlayer, not counting codec compatibility) are also free.

It's funny that "system maintenance" would come up in a thread for switchers, because only windows users really think they have to work to keep their computers running smoothly. I know this is only anecdotal evidence, but I run my machine pretty hard and I've never once run a single "system maintenance" program, nor do I know of anyone who does. OS X takes care of itself. I propose that it's irresponsible to imply to new-comers that they need know about any of those apps.

I don't see Yahoo Messenger in here. Its good for chat & video conferencing cross-platform. There is Mac, PC and Linux version, and they all work nicely together. I've used iSight with a PC friend and it works without a any problems... MSN has come out recently with video support

What about Skype (www.skype.com)? I have used it a few times for chat and the sound quality is excellent, as is the file exchange. I haven't tried the conference facility yet. You also have the option of SkypeOut where you can connect to a phone at the other end - most countries cost €0.02 per minute so I suspect I have paid my last phone bill. It has made a big difference to me, and as the company was set up by the guy who developed Kazaa they are not a rapacious greedy bunch.
