I haven't actually used it at all, but from what others have been saying about it, perhaps Shiira should be added to the Browser list?

Also, a couple of other suggestions as essential utilities:

MacJanitor (esp for i/PowerBook owners) for manually running the system crontab that clears the system.log file etc.

Cronnix for much the same reason (its a GUI app for altering crontabs, including the system crontab which enables you to re-schedule the times for the daily/weekly/monthly tasks to more sensible times).

Word processing and spreadsheet:
1. Mariner Write & Calc: Just the right amount of features. To it's credit: liked by ATPM.
FTP:
2. Captain FTP: Nice Cocoa FTP client. To it's credit: acclaimed by Moore.
A new text-editing section mentioning BBEdit, BBEdit Lite, TextWrangler, Tex-Edit Plus, TextEdit, etc.
A new HTML/CSS/JavaScript section.

It might be kind of helpful to have a translation between Windows apps and their corresponding ones for Mac. That way, people who are switching from Mac to PC can figure out what apps they need to do the same things they did on PC.

Why would anyone need an extra app to refresh the date in the iCal Dock graphics ? It does it by itself. I started iCal at around 10pm and when midnight came closer and the hour turned to midnight and then some- I noticed that it changed by itself. OMG WOW.

Atleast it does this with the latest versions of iCal and Panther. Can't tell if it does it on Jaquar aswell.

Do some basic sound editing:

If open, it does. I don't always use iCal. Some days I don't use it, but when I had it in my dock (I use F10 now), I liked having the current date without having to open and close iCal.

Backup needs to include:

ChronoSync (simple, VERY effective file/folder synchronization utility, with background scheduling support)

You Synchronize (same functionality, slower than ChronoSync, but can be more accurate due to use of checksums instead of file dates)

Impression -- Backs up to disk images, CDs, DVDs, remote folders, etc.

A page and a half of suggestions and we haven't covered the completely obvious (other than Word):

Desktop Publishing
Adobe Photoshop - the premier image-editing app on the Mac (or probably any other platform)
Adobe Illustrator - the original vector-based illustration tool
Macromedia FreeHand - another great vector-based illustration tool
QuarkXpress - the more-or-less standard for page layout, from the company that hates you
Adobe InDesign - an excellent page layout tool, but not as ubiquitous. From the company that, deep within its soul, wishes you were on Windows (but will never admit it).

Web Publishing
Macromedia DreamWeaver - WYSIWYG web authoring environment
Adobe GoLive - DreamWeaver's main competitor
CSSEdit - an excellent standalone shareware CSS editor
Tag - probably not commonly used--since it's so new--but promising shareware HTML editor

Pro-Level Font Management
FontAgent Pro
MasterJuggler
Suitcase and/or FontReserve

More of the obvious:

Video Editing
Final Cut Pro - taking Hollywood by storm, they say. Steep learning curve if you're new to this kind of thing.
Final Cut Express - for mere mortals, at least in terms of price, but still a bitch to learn. Fortunately there are books for this. And a diety who goes by the unlikely name of Tom Wolsky who inhabits the Apple Final Cut Express user forums.

Sound Editing
Logic Pro
Logic Express

This post brought to you courtesy of Apple friggin' Computer, Inc., who seem to have cornered the market on this sort of thing.

Desktop Publishing

RagTime Available for both OS X and OS 9, as well as cross-platform for Windows. This German developed program is very capable, including high end word processing, page layout, spreadsheet, drawing, etc.

The Solo version can be used for free for personal use. I am laying out a personal writing project of 300 pages (text and photos). I am very satisfied with it.

I know this has been mentioned already, but Quicksilver is really coming of age. I'm pretty sure that once Tiger is out it'll be of no use whatsoever but until then it is fantastic.

I suggested a title 'Manage files differently' here on the first page of this thread, including Quicksilver (links and all).

Any new additions to that list?

I'd like to add Nice Player to the video section. It plays all Quicktime but in a stylish and minimal window with no border, title bar etc and has native full screen support.

I have found that thee best video player for me is MPlayer. It plays all Quicktime and many other codecs (wmv, avi, and more). If there is any other video player that can do all that MPlayer does and more please let me know. I have found that MPlayer does have some trouble playing .wmv files occasionally. Minor bug though.

I think the app's status (open source, etc) and price should also be shown, as well as some kind of general rating or indication if it's still being actively developed. And, Mozilla Firefox surely merits more than the description "open source browser"!

How about:

FireFox: Free, Open Source, supports tabbed browsing, plug ins, pop up blocking.

I keep it open all day to remember a single event recurring daily. You can have it play a little sound when it's time.

note: don't tick the "all day event" box and be careful with the invites!

...want to: flatten the volume of divx movies...

Get: Audio Hyjack Pro

Hyjack mplayer or whatever you are using and mess around with the effects. I can't remember exactly what to do (I just got a new DVD player), but it's there. No longer will you be jumping up from the sofa to turn down the incredibly loud bits.

These phrases are on my "Loud movies" file and no doubt hold the key:

If I could suggest, in addition to other software search sites, one of my own. It has a larger selection of apps than the others, has far fewer dead/missing links, less advertising, better tracking of licensing, and some unique search options.

I get asked an awful lot by customers whether creating backup copies of one's own DVDs is possible on the Mac.

I suggest a category for this, with

DVDBackup and MactheRipper

That's not really accurate. Open Source alternatives like MPlayer don't support the latest Windows Media codecs, they don't support QT features like QTVR, interactive sprites, chapters, reference movies, copy protected content, text tracks, QT frame-accurate editing or navigation, or more obscure codecs like indeo or 3ivx d3. Open source media players are a supplement to corporate ones, not a replacement. Furthermore WMP and QT (or apps that use it to provide the same or more features than MPlayer, not counting codec compatibility) are also free.

It's funny that "system maintenance" would come up in a thread for switchers, because only windows users really think they have to work to keep their computers running smoothly. I know this is only anecdotal evidence, but I run my machine pretty hard and I've never once run a single "system maintenance" program, nor do I know of anyone who does. OS X takes care of itself. I propose that it's irresponsible to imply to new-comers that they need know about any of those apps.

I don't see Yahoo Messenger in here. Its good for chat & video conferencing cross-platform. There is Mac, PC and Linux version, and they all work nicely together. I've used iSight with a PC friend and it works without a any problems... MSN has come out recently with video support

Commonly used Chat applications

What about Skype (www.skype.com)? I have used it a few times for chat and the sound quality is excellent, as is the file exchange. I haven't tried the conference facility yet. You also have the option of SkypeOut where you can connect to a phone at the other end - most countries cost €0.02 per minute so I suspect I have paid my last phone bill. It has made a big difference to me, and as the company was set up by the guy who developed Kazaa they are not a rapacious greedy bunch.
