I'll believe it when I see it...

Better yet, I might even buy it.

Powerpage comments are in indirect accordance with one earlier rumor saying that IBM and Apple are preparing a new mobile 64-bit CPU (something like mobile G5) for the Powerbooks that is not expected until well in 2005 (I think this was in Macrumors). This fits very well with two G4 Powerbook updates until then.

Gosh I just got a 17" on Saturday. I hope the new models come out within 20 days. That's when I can do that up-to-date thing right?

It's 10 days and I believe they only take it back if its unopened. If the box is opened they charge a 10 percent restocking fee.

If they DROP the price of the machine you bought within 10 days, you are entitled to a refund of the difference, but you have to contact them.

Linky.

Hi!

Specifically what is the official Apple offer regarding hardware replacement (such as this) within a certain amount of time (10 days?). Is there a catch / fee? Is it from payment or order?

Ta folks!

the top models also have the new video chip option with up to 128MB VRAM (could it be the Mobility Radeon 9700?).
Gah, if they leave the 12" video card alone I am going to be pissed. I want a 12" with 166mhz fsb (staying with 1ghz would be fine, 1.25 or something would be better of course) and a radeon9600 64mb vram... I spose a 1.25ghz w/ 128mb 9700 for $1800 (education price) would be alright... but i really wanted a 12"!

How much 3D work are you going to be doing on a 12" Powerbook?

There is a good chance that I will be working at an apple specialist computer store (not an apple store but one that only sells macs) and I want to get rid of my dp 800 and get a 15" laptop. I have 2 questions. 1. do you think i would get a discount? 2. do you think a new laptop will come out this summer? thanks

I believe the article says there is one more update to go from this new one, until we get to see the G5 in a powerbook. So, according to them there are 2 more updates (the one we are about to see and the last one) to go before the G5.

Yep, by O'Grady's reasoning, another G4 update in the fall, with a PowerBook G5 being announced at MacWorld in January (with a 3 month delay in shipping ).

I have to agree. Powerpage used to be accurate a long long time ago, but they have been widely off the mark for a long time. I'd love to see an update (and would probably get it) but I really doubt it this week for two reasons:

1.) No one else is reporting this. Powerpage says it as fact, but I would think there be lower inventory if such an update was coming this week.

2.) Hardware updates are ALWAYS on a Tuesday unless there is an event with keynote on a Wednesday. No keynote this week, so it would be Tuesday. But this Tuesday is two days before the end of Apple's fiscal quarter. No company would introduce new hardware two days before the end of the quarter.

Remember all rumors the past few weeks and nothing materializing. My $10 is on no new PowerBooks this week.

There are three major problems with putting a G5 into a PowerBook:

1. Heat - G5s produce more heat then G4s and need a larger / more efficient cooling mechanism. People keep bitching about fans on their PowerBook G4s all the time, so if they can liquid cool it or something that would be great.

2. Size - Heat-sinks on PowerMac G5s are HUGE, putting something like that in a PowerBook will make it 10" thik not 1" thin

3. Battery - G5s need more energy and laptops have to last longer then a couple of hours ... unless you want a huge battery to carry with you.

UCLA computer store has been selling the top-of-the-line 15.2" 1.25GHz SuperDrive/80GB for $1,999 since last December.

7,200 RPM drives are inexpensive enough to install in top-of-the-line units, so making it as standard equipment is a good idea.

It's about time.

I can smash your complaints.

1. The heat, combined with the power tuning of the 970fx and lowered die size, is NOT a problem.

2. The heatsinks on the powermac g5 are designed to hold a LOT of heat, thus the fans can run at a very low speed if that... some PC heatsinks are HUGE because they have no fans..

3. Considering the powerbooks don't need to have a 26v/ADC line that can power a 17" CRT (180w right there), and no desktop drives, I think there wouldn't be an issue with that.

There are centrinos that at full blast suck more energy than the 970fx at ~1.8ghz would.

why would u. The g4 has a great life spand. Look at where its going. less watts faster cpu. It will be at least 1 or 2 more rounds before a g5 comes. Plues its all marketing. Apple will do what ever it takes to sell them.
" Motorola today released a 1.5GHz version of its G4 PowerPC processor for embedded applications: "The MPC7447A offers developers on-chip power management features, such as the ability to change clock frequencies dynamically... and significantly reduce processor power consumption. [It] also contains a temperature sensing diode that can be used to monitor die temperature under various operating conditions." The chip uses 130 nm, silicon-on-insulator (SOI) copper interconnect process technology with both low power (9W @ 1.2GHz) and standard power (19W @ 1.4GHz) versions available for $245 per chip in quantities of 10,000. [updated]"

remember that.

*gah...*

Can we please not devolve writing posts into AOL-Chat colloqualisms? Please? It's so hard to read without punctuation; I don't even want to bother with the "content" of the quoted message.

Anyway, Back OT: Powerpage is a tool, apparently; and one, maybe two revisions in G4-land perhaps, but I don't forsee the G5 going in this year. Sure, heat dissapation is on a par for the CPU itself, but there are other components to consider.

I hope I'm wrong.

Gee it's Wednesday and no new PowerBooks (new hardware is never released on Thursday or Friday). What a surprise! To bad the powerpage has to resort to such lame tactics to look for page hits I guess.

Don't count on it. April 1 is Apple's Birthday. Maybe, just maybe, Apple may intoduce something on that day and it may seem like an April Fool's joke for a split second.

Physics lesson for the day:

Heatsinks do not "hold heat." Heat only flows. It can't be held despite the poor choice of the phrase "heat capacity" used to describe materials. You probably mean have a lot of internal energy, which they still don't since they are metal and have low heat capacities. Heatsinks are designed with large surface areas to maximize heat conductance away from cpu's. That's why high power cpu's have large heatsinks.

Fans (air flow) improve the efficiency of heatsinks. The greater the air flow applied means the smaller the surface area that can be used in a heatsink design. Of course, this comes at the cost of greater fan noise.

Class dismissed!

iBook G4 was released on THURSDAY. But we can count it as an exception, since it was the day before the official release of the Panther.
