any suggestions on a decent quality and reliable external drive? i've gone through external drive enclosures before and i've had back luck. they crap out, power on/off randomly, etc.

i am again in need of some external storage and was looking at lacie drives. are they any good? i've always liked seagate as well for internal drives, any reviews of their external drives? or any other brands? i know iomega has a few out as well

I would buy a good quality enclosure and a seagate drive with the 5 yr warranty. I have never had any power problems with my enclosures and I doubt you will if you use a higher quality enclosure in the $50-100 range instead of lower. I personally have and like my aluminum coolmax enclosure that has the oxford 911 chipset and both firewire and usb 2.

I really think the rate of failure will be the same for you even if you buy a commercial product.

Just get a good enclosure for like $50ish, then buy any hard drive you want. I have a firewire enclosure i scored from newegg for like $48 and it works fantastic.

I'll third that. I'm using a Macally FW enclosure with a Seagate drive and I couldn't be happier.
