I am looking for a shareware/freeware program that will allow mp3 files to be edited, like if you were going o shorten them or edit out parts. Is there anything out there that anyone has heard of that will do this?

You could always open in QuickTime Pro and convert to aiff... then use any decent app (such as QuickTime Player) to edit out bits, then re encode to mp3...

mEdit can do it, however I haven't use it yet. But it's worth to check it out. It seems to be an "eternal" beta though...
Hope this helps

actually, i don't think you have to convert it to AIFF.
QT Pro lets you edit an mp3 without converting it
