I am a huge trekie and i have to say I was incredibly disappointed with that design. Without the lower large secondary hull it doesn't look much like the Enterprises that followed it but the predecessor to the Akira class ships from First contact onwards:
Most of all though it didn't feel retro or creative enough to me for what they could have done and in many shots from the bottom it looked like it was a squashed pancake.
Apparently early on the designs for the NX looked very close to the original 1701 but they changed it last minute.
Strangely enough my favorite ship design in the trek universe is the Akira class though. I also really liked the odd look of the Pasteur which was also a modern take on a old design.

You ever see some of the early designs of the Defiant? They were much more bad ass and cooler cuz it could also split in 2. It was also called the USS Valiant up until the last minute.

Yep those are them. The one on the bottom left if the one I mentioned can split in 2 but I can't tell if that was more of an emergency escape thing or a tectical feature like that ship in voyager that could split in 3 for battles.

As you can see it was also much smaller at the time. One thing DS9 really ****ed up on was how big was the defiant exactly? Sometimes it is pretty big in relation to other ships and even having shuttles and others it is tiny. I also couldn't stand how they rode the turbo lift for 1-2 minutes on it even though it is only a couple hundred feet long and 4 levels. You could definitely walk faster most of the time.
Also the biggest DUH moment with ALL Star Trek USS designs is the fact that the bridge is located at the top with optional skylight.... even on warships like the defiant. If there is one thing a bad guy should target it is that and the rest takes care of itself.

That always bothered me too.
BTW, the ship has a Dominion type feel to it.

Right now my current fav is the Cylons basestars:
The great thing about them is the don't have that usual aerodynamic spaceship look nor do they have a true front/back or any real recognizable parts to them like engines or shuttlebays. This way they look totally alien to the rest of the human ships in the same universe and fresh and new to SciFi fans.
Even cooler is they make a lot of sense from a tactical standpoint if you look at it closely.

The planes from Macross. Shoji Kawamori and Studio Nue took one of the most famous fighter plane designs and created a thing of dreams. A F14(esque) that can fly in space, has extra armor and weapons, and can transform into a battle suit? The way they engineered the transformation process is a thing of beauty. I love it to this day.

I think it was also a good time for it to go story wise as did the writers.
If it had been Star Trek it would have gotten destroyed by the end of the first episode it was in so we should be happy it lasted as long as it did.

Actually, they remind me a lot of the Shadow ships in Babylon 5, with the alien, menacing "pointy" look. The basestars just a lot bigger.
