Thumbnail icons?

When I first saw a screen shot of OS X 10.0, the first thing that really wowed me, other than the interface, was the thumbnail icons for picture files... small versions of the picture itself. But here I am on 10.4 five years later, and 99% of the icons on my hard drive are still generic picture icons. Ironically, the only thumbnail icons I have of pictures are ones that were saved in OS 9!
What's the deal? Is there some hidden feature I've been missing all these years? Is it so hard for OS X to turn the picture into an icon directly? Is there a 3rd party app that does this?

Oh Dear God I feel like an idiot. Thanks.
I realized part of the problem is that option isn't available when using Column view, which I have been using for the past 5 years. I guess it goes to show OS X is like a hobbit... you can learn all there is to know about it in a month, and yet after 5 years it can still surprise you.

It's as if the Finder was designed to hide features, isn't it.

Along the same subject, I just got a new 20" iMac yesterday with Tiger pre-installed, and at some point today my Finder stopped drawing thumbnails for my documents - neither as icons or as previews in column view. Anyone got a fix? Surely there's something I can trash somewhere that'll get the finder off it's lazy bum. Thanks!
