Having just hopped on the broadband train, I have been testing out various P2P apps in the vain hope of actually finding something as refined and simple to use as Napster used to be.

However, it seems almost 2 years on there is still nothing that matches the refinement and capability of the Napster network.

I've tried Acquisition, Limewire, Neo, Direct Connect; and tried to install eDonkey, and giFTBoX - but failed miserably with these.

So I am interested to know if there is something I've missed - what are the experiences of you educated mac users?

LimeWire (sucky app but better than Aqcuisition), DirectConnect and Carracho.

Direct connect, Aquisition and Neo do the trick.

Can anyone help me get GiFT working? My problem is Autoconf (my version is too old) won't update for nothing.

in my opinion, the only thing to come close to napster (and maybe even surpass it) is soulseek.

it's only available for pc at the moment, but a mac client is in development.

Yeah - I love Soulseek - looking forward to a functioning mac client but at the moment it is just too buggy.

Can anyone explain to me how I find decent hubs to connect to in Direct Connect? I mean I generally either get kicked out as soon as I join a hub or get put in a 20 user queue which then just times out or something.

SoulSeek:

You can get the cocoa alpha. It's on sourceforge and its called soleseek. There is no binary to download. You have to download the source and compile it. Dev tools must be installed.

i've found that doing the following will usually get you in good:

1) share LOTS of stuff (lots of hubs specify in GB's)

2) for every hub connected, make sure you have an equivalent number of slots (got kicked off a couple times for not doing this)

3) don't go for the hubs that have like 400 people on; there's no point. sort your public list by number of users, and pick the smaller guys.

4) search for mac hubs, they seem to be a little more 'personable'

Aquisition works best for me. Been using it since version .6 and just registered it today.
