My iBook started making a buzzing noise soon after the fan goes on. The noise is discomforting coming from such a small computer. It usually happens when I'm playing a heavy processor intensive game or an online game (diablo 2). Its still under warranty so I'll probably just send it in but I want to be sure there is no easy fix first. I can prolong the time before the fan starts by setting the processor speed to Reduced but eventually the fan comes on soon followed by a harmonic buzzing. The buzzing will get louder untill a point when the fan stops and so does the buzzing. My iBook gets pretty hot, not as hot as my PowerBook but still...

The only thing I can think of from your description is that the frame or something close to the fan is vibrating when the fan comes on.

If it is still under warranty, might as well give Apple a call. I've seen books go out for repair for one thing and come back with other small things (keyboard, trackpad, etc) fixed as well that the user didn't even know there was a problem with. Better to do it now than have the problem get worse or cause other issues after the warranty is over.

I feel your pain...boy8cookie
yeah my ibook fan has been rattling for the last 6 months.. and yeah i called applecare and stuff.. took it in to a repair shop.. but yeah.. it was CompuSmart and the know nothing about apple products.... the returned it back saying thats how it should sound.. and charged me 50 bucks for it.
luckly I told applecare and they paid for the service fee.

I haven't had the time to call back again(due to the fact that i don't have it with me for the past 4 months, away for univeristy) but as soon as i can i will call again. Especially since i just purchased a G5 iMac and this fan is whinning like a bi#$$.. yeah
but go check here boy i recorded the sound from my ibook. tell me if your sounds like this.
