The preamp allows any Mac with a digital out to connect to the surround system also decodes Dolby Digital and DTS.
The preamp also can take several outputs 3 analog and 2 digital alllows you to change the source so you can have consoles or other stereo devices hooked up and enjoy surround sound.

I have had this setup to G4's through analog connection and recently to G5 and Mac pro through digital output. No scratches these speakers were taken care of have orogonal packaging for the speakers as well.
They sound incredible just not able to enjoy as much due to moving and pissy neighbors. If you have picky neighbors and want to piss them off these are the speakers to get they will rattle windows and scare the dogs and cats.
