I have a one week old iMac 700 combo that works fine except for one problem. After starting up, the first sleep and wake cycle works fine. After that, it takes 90 seconds for sleep to kick in, and then another 90 seconds to wake up. During the 90 seconds that it takes to sleep, the CPU monitor says that there is no activity. This behavior is repeatable, but once in awhile it will sleep immediately, the way it is supposed to. This happens under 10.1.4 that the computer came with, and under 10.1.5 that I just upgraded to. The only software I have added to the computer is MS Office, AOL and a few games. No applications are running when this happens. I can't find any mention of this problem on any of the boards. Any ideas? Or should I just hope that Jaguar fixes things?

For anyone who is curious, re-installing OS X cured the problem.

Back to square one.

After re-installing OS X, my sleep/re-start problem disappeared for only a short while. A half-hour later it re-appeared. So I'm still looking for answers. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

<hr /></blockquote>Try turning off ldap - tell us more about your internet connection. We were seeing the same sort of stuff till our "always on" cablemodem arrived. We knew it was network because the modem on the router would dial out. . . . . I've not taken the time to trace it down but will if turning off ldap doesn't solve it for you. . ..

This time I think I've got it solved.

I spent an hour on the phone today with Apple support (who was quite helpful). Most of the time we tried changing software settings or trashing various files, but nothing worked. Then we tried disconnecting peripherals.

I have a DSL connection, an Epson 740 printer and an older 100 MB Zip drive. It turns out the Zip drive was causing the problem. When I disconnect it from the USB, everything works fine. In fact, if the computer is in one of its 90 second waits for sleep or wake-up, disconnecting the Zip drive will immediately cause sleep or wake-up to proceed normally.

I swapped the 100 MB Zip drive with a newer bus-powered 250 MB Zip drive (both drives from Iomega) and everything works fine. So there is something about the older Zip drive that the iMac doesn't like. I still don't know what was causing the problem, but at least I have a workaround for it.
