If you can get an AFP-based NAS drive why would you want one that uses SMB - especially on a home network w/all Apple computers (don't need PC compatibility)? Isn't AFP superior to SMB in this situation? Or is the difference not that great?

Caveat: I'm completely out of my depth on the whole issue of network protocols so I hope this question makes sense.

AFP is the best in an all mac environment, but when you throw windows or linux into the mix you will then need smb. SMB has its drawbacks when transferring data as it's rather CPU intensive and in general doesn't work all that well(for huge files) DVD images, etc. It works fine for smaller stuff tho, streaming music, or just smaller files, etc.
