Could someone explain how to merge PDFs into one PDF using Preview? I can't get it to work because when I hit Command-S to save the document, it just saves the first page

Greetings.
Could someone explain how to merge PDFs into one PDF using Preview?
I have 4 PDFs, each being one page.
If I try to merge them all into one of the documents in the sidebar, so that the document contains thumbnails for all four PDFs, then I save (e.g. with Command-S), it doesn't actually save. I tried highlighting all the thumbnails and then doing save, and it doesn't work. Just the original document only gets re-written to file.

I realize that I could select all and do File > Print, and then save that as PDF, but the problem is that each PDF document is a different size, and doing this changes the document sizes to all 8.5" by 11"

I tried following Apple's directions in the Help menu, but it didn't work.

For me, this stopped working more than a year ago.
It used to work until then, but one day, it just stopped working.

Every since then, I have used a 3rd party app (PDFPen) to do that (and other things).

Have the sidebar show thumbnails.

You can drag and drop them to rearrange. Drag one ON TOP of another (the cursor will change to a green "+" cursor) to add two PDFs together.

The "on top" part is key. Otherwise you just add to a list of documents in the sidebar.

This worked for me, as long as I saw the "+" bubble and as long as I was dropping the thumbnail of one file absolutely exactly on top of the thumbnail of another in the sidebar.

Well, I guess the behavior has changed.

It was much more intuitive in the past.

Job well done, Apple, "improving" what wasn't broken.
