My mother-in-law has owned a G4 Mac mini for a couple of years, and it's performed like a champ. It was finally time for an upgrade to a 20" Intel iMac, so I agreed to eBay her mini for her. Bidding ended today, so I connected it to my wife's LCD and I get no signal. I had the same issue with another LCD monitor, but thought it was a defective monitor. My mother-in-law always had it connected to a CRT via the VGA connector. So apparently there is a problem with DVI but not VGA - which is odd since they both use the same port. How can I troubleshoot this? I tried booting from the install CD hoping it might be a software issue, but no dice.

What's upsetting is knowing that if this is a hardware defect, it was likely present when the machine was brand new, yet went undetected since we used VGA. Now it's out of warranty and I might be hosed.

Any suggestions appreciated. I'll have to contact the buyer...

DVI-I, which is what the Mac mini has, sends both analog and digital signal on pins next to each other. The VGA adapter simply routes the analog signal to the correct pins on VGA side. COULD be a fault in the digital pins so that the monitor isn't detected, but I doubt it. Reset PRAM (Cmd-opt-P-R) to get it back to default resolution - that might help. Check the port for external damage - could be a bent pin, or something stuck in the port or something. Try booting of the OS CD to eliminate any software issue.
