"w00t" crowned word of year by U.S. dictionary - Yahoo! Canada News
Massachusetts-based Merriam-Webster Inc. said "w00t" -- typically spelled with two zeros -- reflects a new direction in the American language led by a generation raised on video games and cell phone text-messaging.
It's like saying "yay," the dictionary said.
"It could be after a triumph or for no reason at all," Merriam-Webster said.
Visitors to Merriam-Webster's Web site were invited to vote for one of 20 words and phrases culled from the most frequently looked-up words on the site and submitted by readers.
Runner-up was "facebook" as a new verb meaning to add someone to a list of friends on the Web site Facebook.com or to search for people on the social networking site.
I find this amusing, but also at the same time mildly concerning. It's fine for casual writing, but I hope that internet shorthand for other words doesn't make it into formal writing any time soon.

I'm disturbed they decided on a word with numbers in it. This is unprecedented, isn't it?

My Prediction:
By the Year 2015, "yay" will be entirely replaced by "w00t".

Not anymore. It was replaced by "w00t" ahead of schedule.
"Yay" no longer exists.

Depends on the dictionary, but most group it under as an alternate spelling for "yeah" and "yea."

Right, but the article quotes a Merriam Webster spokesman using the work "yay" and "yay" isn't a word in Merriam-Webster's own dictionary!
Just thought it was funny.

Lamest

How many of you actually use the word "pwned" in actual conversations?
I admit to having used it three or four times. Or maybe 10.

Indeed. With the way things are going, if dictionaries start to accept shorthand and leetspeek spelling, in 30 years, I'll be buying H@rsn's 7x7bk of 1nt. m3d, 25th 3d. (Harrison's Textbook of Internal Medicine, 25th edition).
