I have been reading these posts for about 12 months now and am very distresed about the amount for letters that people send in about there iMac 's going belly up after about one year of use!
I will have had my Grape DV 400 iMac approx 12 months in the next few days does this mean it will self distruct or what?
If it does I must say unless I can fix the prob myself I will probably not bother paying huge bills for apple to do it.

These forums are where people come when they're having problems. So you're going to hear an above-average number of horror stories just as a matter of course.
Let's put it this way...my iMac is seven months old. I don't forsee it suddenly exploding sometime in September

Kali, don't take someone else's testimonials as a reflection of what might happen to you. For some people, it takes only a few days for a problem to pop up... Some a few weeks... Some a few months... Some never. There's no rhyme or reason to it. It could happen to non-iMacs as well.
It just seems like *everyone* is having troubles with their iMac. Way back when the Internet was just a rumor, you didn't have people going online to a website forum and posting their troubles. Did that mean that there weren't problems? Absolutely not. Just that you're hearing more about other people's problems, does that mean there are more problems now than ever? Absolutely not.
There are tons of iMac users out there, and a small percentage will undoubtedly run into troubles (as is the case for any other product out there). I'm not saying that something won't happen to your computer in the near future. But, as with anything, it *could*... And not just because you have an iMac.
With that having been said, I had the infamous "wavy lines" problem with my Ruby iMac DV 400, and I had the video board replaced under warranty just a couple weeks ago... An intermittent problem, but still wanted to get it done before the warranty ended in another 5 months. But like I said, don't worry... hehe

Lets put it this way....I was an avid Windows user for years and when I saw the iBook come out I just had to have one. Now I have 2 iMacs, and iBook and a PowerMac 7100 that I upgraded. I got rid of my Windows Pc and won't go back. I really think that Apple's best days are ahead of them. I did have a problem with the iBook (bad cd drive and "clicker") but Apple's repair center was excellant. I was all set to buy a newer iMac but the wife vetoed it.

As Lee Vieira says, the forums are for people who have problems, so you have to expect to read about problems. My Rev. A iMac, which i got in Nov. 0f 1998, is still humming away without a problem. It's slow now in comparison to the other Macs I've gotten since, but I still love it.

Grape iMac, 15 months old, no problems, have added lots of RAM, use firewire for video and hard disk storage, all kinds of USB add-ons.
Don't worry. Be happy.

My 333MHz. iMac will be two next month as is going strong. OS 9.1 and 256 MB of RAM are the only upgrades so far. I'm thinking about upgrading to a bigger hard drive soon. Any problems that I have had with the iMac over these two years have been self inflicted and self repaired.

I have had my Bondi imac since 1998 and have never had a problem.
I agree!
31 months of usage, added a larger hard drive, TV/SCSI card, RAM, etc. But called Apple Support once due to a software problem. Now, running it next to my TiBook as a TV, CD-burning, and file server.
No such GLoD nor fried analoge board happened.

Lime iMac DV 400mhz, bought Feb 2000. Working great, had no problems. Very rarely crashes, and if it does, it's because I forget to eject a CD before switching my firewire CDRW off.
Overall, A great piece of equipment.

Through the mezzanine slot on the Rev A/B's. Formac made something called the iProRaid TV; I don't know if it's still available.
Anyway, just to add: I bought my grape iMac DV in November 1999 and it's running fine.

WOW, Thanx for all the replys.
I surpost it's like everything in life sometimes you just get a lemon !
It seems over the wide spectrum (sorry, UK joke!) of macintosh users that they have got most of the bugs out of the iMac from the first ver. A models (I would liked to still be able to upgrade my iMac as the first few models were, but still you cannot have everything !)
Kali
P.S nice to see a high % of Grapes out there !!!!
