As part of my developer membership I have Tiger. Do I install it on my main box in place of Panter? Is this a bad idea?

(This is not a tech support question, I'm just seeking an opinion)

I'm completely sure that they told you that it was only for use on a testing machine. In other words, no. Unless you're willing to completely trash your computer.

Actually the CD came with no docs whatsoever.

I didn't want to even insert it until I got some feedback.

Thanks ... I'll put it on one of my older machines.
(I just didn't know if it was stable enough for daily use)

Perhaps Apple thinks it is, but you don't want to be the Guinea Pig that discovers it isn't do you?

There are most certainly some things in Tiger that are not feature complete or have bugs. I mean, the ship date is listed as 1H 2004, that's 5-11 months out still

Actually it was a DVD, not a CD. If you don't have an external, secondary internal or a partitioned drive, I would not install it.
If you don't have another drive, this is certainly one of those times when a partitioned drive would be very useful, despite what the many naysayers have to say.

When I was *Ahem! cough!* previewing Panther, I had an iMac 400 which was ideal for this job. A little dated sure, But in some ways this is a good thing, as any performance differences are far more noticeable.
I see you have an old'ish iMac too, so if possible, install on there.
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

That machine currently has OS9 on it which my kids use frequently for their edu-tainment titles.

I wonder if Tiger will co-exist. Hmm ....
(Don't answer that ... this will then turn into a tech suport thread.)

You have a Dev membership and you aren't sure about installing beta-software? That sounds alittle silly to me

Perhaps ....
silly me.

I just haven't played with Apple's beta OSs before.
(I'm a Windows developer - convert ... over there we are paranoid about everything. I just wans't sure that the same paranoia still applied.) :-)

Paranoia never? Only way to find out for sure is if you install it you know you want too...

Pushes the DVD in the drive and starts the ball rolling for the former windows developer...

Yeah that is sorta funny since windows really hasn't developed...

j/k somewhat
It just works so I don't have to

I would not put it on your main box... maybe if you have a free partition... but not in place of panther. This is why I always wait until it's out in the stores before installing it on my machines... still beta!

I hearby issue my formal public apology for asking a dumb question. I always try and ask at least 2 per year and I was behind quota. I am now officially caught up.

Put aside a weekend. Take a good backup. Wipe out everything-install Tiger. Boot it. Play a little. "Woahh!" a little. When you're done, restore everything to its former state. (Provided you did take those backups.) I don't think (albeit I haven't tried it) Tiger at this stage should be threaded as trusted software under any circumstances. But it might be stable still. Just IMO.

Sniffer gone old-school sig

No worries we're just teasing. You could install it on an iPod but don't boot off of it for long or it'll burn out the insides. Since iPods weren't designed for OS booting.

I got it at the WWDC and like you said, it comes with no printed documentation. However, within the dvd there is documentation readily available. It was made available to developers, so that we can get to grips with all the new key technologies such as core data, core video core image etc... and have our products ready to ship alongside the OS when it is launched.
As a beta / early build, it is quite stable, however when i compare it to last years handout of Panther at the WWDC, it is not nearly as polished a build or as close to final release (which is to be expected).
To be honest, the only reason you should install it is if you are interested in starting development with any new key technologies. I found that a lot of existing apps that relied on OpenGL and Core Graphics did not run properly under the Tiger build handed out at WWDC, so if all you are interested in is messing around with it, I would hold fire for the time being. I would imagine that there will be a newer build made available shortly on the ADC... steve himself was demoing a different build to the one we received.
I have found that a number of apps do not work happily on the current build of Tiger. Its a fantastic OS, but I would wait for the next seeded build before I would install to be honest... it just aint reliable enough yet with existing apps at this stage in its development.
But Bertrand did warn us at the OS X state of the Union!!

Thanks. That's GREAT information. I'm looking at the docs on the disk now as well.

I appreciate it.

LOL. I will look for the third question on the forums, better be prepared not to ask it until new years'.
Joking.

If you have an iPod and want to definitely give 10.4 a spin, mount your iPod, mount the DVD, navigate to the "/System/Installation/Packages" on the DVD, run "OSInstall.mpkg" and select iPod. Make sure to put some ice cubes wrapped inside a plastic bag, and put that under your iPod (not joking).

And copy any music over because that kind of sustained usage could damage the iPod. The drives weren't meant for that kind of heavy-duty usage.
In an emergency, sure. If you're a developer, you have to have some kind of external storage. Clone a drive or partition an external and install Panther on that.

If you got the preview legitimately, then you have access to all the documentation for it at the Apple developer site. Should should heed all Apple's warnings and advice.

Substantial changes in temperature in either direction are bad for electronic components (due to the shrinking/expanding effect).
