I've been looking closely at photos of the new, beautiful beast all over the net but I can't for the life of me find the power button.
It's not the chrome apple is it? One of those touch-sensitive buttons?

Its on the far back left, next to the ports. Running Mac OS X it won't need to be turned off, so it stays out of immediate reach (and the reach of small children that like to push buttons!)

its in what would normally be considered a stupid place: the back...
but i guess since apple assumes you wont be turning the thing off that often because of the unix base you really dont need to reach it
to see a pic go here:

Why won't you have to turn it off? OK, I know OS X is Unix, and therefore doesn't crash, but wouldn't the life-span of the LCD display be affected by being constantly on?

You just put the computer to sleep; I assume the monitor will go to sleep, too... No different than my TiBook laptop. I never turn it off.

That's all very well, but why not turn it off? It will be a home machine, and as I am at work during the day there is no need for it to be on! And that would save my power bill too!

They should have left a power button on the keyboard. Oh well. Kidokie, I see what you mean. I personally turn my iMac off because I am at school during the day. Plus, that fan is so loud.

I turn my iMac off when I'm away, so I know no one else will be messing with it while I'm gone.
It's mine! If they want to play, let them get their own.

I would bet that if you were to get one of the older Mac keyboards with a power button attached that you should be able to pull it off. That's what I've been doing when using my Pismo with lid closed is using the older keyboard for power, hardware power off, etc.
Now there's also an attachment that some online USB accessory store sells that will clip onto your new pro keyboard for power on, but apparently, it won't give you the shutdown dialog only when you're prepared to shut it down or sleep. Sorry, I don't know the site offhand.

I don't think you could save a noticeable amount of power by turning the computer off instead of putting it to sleep.

If I know I'll be leaving my iMac for more than 8 hours, I turn it off.

They should have put a touch sensitive button at the top of the monitor like this:

Password-protect the screen saver? (assuming you're running OS X, of course - which these new machines are)
With CRT iMacs, there *is* a most notable difference in power consumption between sleep and power off, since the CRT is still drawing power when sleeping. This difference should be *far* less on the LCD models.

Yeah, the screen saver idea is the best one. It's what I use, and I'm perfectly satisfied.
