Rand Paul filibustering Brennan nomination to lead CIA

John Brennan's nomination to lead the CIA was delayed Wednesday by a one-senator filibuster by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., about concerns about the legality of drone strikes against U.S. citizens overseas.

"I'm going to speak as long as I can to draw attention to something I find very disturbing," said Paul, who started speaking at 11:45 a.m.
A real filibuster! Granted, I'm not completely convinced this is the right venue, but the topic is related and amazingly, I agree. I may not be this impressed by the political system again for many many years.

Indeed. If you are going to filibuster do it right. And Sen. Paul raised some substantive issues IMO. I have no problem with his actions at all.

Sen. Paul started off raising some valid issues I stated earlier. Then he just couldn't restrain himself and veered off into far-right Libertarian paranoia. The Jane Fonda analogy was particularly silly.

That being said, I still applaud the man for having to gumption to stage a bonafide, "real deal Holyfield" filibuster.

I'm not sure why a filibuster is supposed to be such an ordeal. Just wear Depends. Hell, McCain and Pelosi probably already do.

Rand Paul is not to be confused with Ron Paul.

Rand Paul won the CPAC straw poll and now I'm left with this feeling that the timing of his real filibuster is suspect.

Well, there goes my opinion of him... I'm going to just write-in Penn Jillette on the presidential ballot next time.

I have a great deal of respect for Sen. Paul. I don't think he was grandstanding.

Who I have NO respect for are Sen. McCain and Graham. During the filibuster they were eating dinner with Prez Obama, and the next morning proceeded to slam Sen. Paul for what he did. Pretty clear THAT connection, huh?

Not sure what you mean, but I assume every politician who slammed him had a case of either the 'don't make us look bads' (taking a stand in a useful way) or was afraid that the public support of a real filibuster opened the door to better reform by Reid (who doesn't have the balls, so don't worry about it).

Rand Paul Pitches Pathway for Undocumented Immigrants

Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky today endorsed a permanent legal status for undocumented immigrants, adding his voice to the debate as separate groups on Capitol Hill search for a way forward on the thorny political issue and beginning "a dialogue between the GOP and Latinos."

In his first major speech on the subject, Paul did not use the word "citizenship" in remarks before the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Washington, the libertarian suggested that people who are in the country illegally should be able to stay without returning to their home country.

"I think we are trapped," Paul said. "The immigration debate has been trapped and it's been polarized by two terms: 'path to citizenship' and amnesty.

Related: Rand Paul Backs Drone Killing Of Hypothetical Armed Robber

"Here's the distinction: I have never argued against any technology being used when you have an imminent threat, an act of crime going on," Paul said on Fox Business Network. "If someone comes out of a liquor store with a weapon and $50 in cash, I don't care if a drone kills him or a policeman kills him. But it's different if they want to come fly over your hot tub or your yard just because they want to do surveillance on everyone, and they want to watch your activities."

A poor example, at best. Horrific philosophy at worst. Drones can't arrest people. In a theoretical world where the police have easy and widespread access to drones, it appears Paul is fine with them acting as judge, jury, and executioner.

Clarification just came up: Sen. Paul Statement on Domestic Drone Use Rand Paul | United States Senator

"My comments last night left the mistaken impression that my position on drones had changed.

"Let me be clear: it has not. Armed drones should not be used in normal crime situations. They may only be considered in extraordinary, lethal situations where there is an ongoing, imminent threat. I described that scenario previously during my Senate filibuster.

"Additionally, surveillance drones should only be used with warrants and specific targets.

"Fighting terrorism and capturing terrorists must be done while preserving our constitutional protections. This was demonstrated last week in Boston. As we all seek to prevent future tragedies, we must continue to bear this in mind."
Well, this I endorse fully.

The original statement seemed so wide open he may as well have said "I support Robocop shooting an armed robber".

I'm firmly on the "it's a tool" side. The issue is going to be how it's used.

There's an issue with a policeman shooting an armed robber?
