I went back for a 3 hour visit to Ridgewood Middle School this morning - retired teacher here. I asked about 100 students why they were off Monday. "It's Memorial Day," they replied. "So what's that," I asked. 10% knew it had something to do with Veterans; 5% that it had to do with dead veterans.

Memorial Day is not a day we remember Veterans, That's Veteran's day In November. Monday is the day we remember those millions who gave their lives in the service of this country. Tell everyone you know younger than 18, and Monday stop for a minute and remember them.

... the 'Dumbing Down of America's Young' is almost complete!

It's true. I just look at it as the first day off since good friday.

I wonder if those students know which birthdays we're celebrating on president's day.

And here I was thinking it was just an extension of Christmas. I guess this also means no presents.

But we're white? I mean, how much better could it get? Well, I guess if you're blonde or have blue eyes...

I only recognize Decoration Day. World War One casualties can get their own damn holiday.

Does dirty blonde count? If so, check and check.

Sure. Now we just need to get you into some posters where you're over-the-top happy for a guy pouring a soda at a picnic.

Yeah, the company I work for (based in Pittsburgh) gives us Good Friday off, but not Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Its embarrassing to tell people (I'm getting red faced right now). I usually use one of my vacation days on MLK day as a lame protest.

I wish my kid brother would have had all those wonderful vacations off, too.

He was killed February 8th 1968, at Khe Sanh, along with 204 other brave Marines.

... no matter, though. Sometimes I forget what kinds of slime suckers there are crawling around us nowadays.

Can we leave the lameness from the other holiday thread where it belongs, please and thank you? Many of us don't find Memorial Day something to joke about.

Zip, sorry for the loss of your brother. His sacrifice is honored. Semper Fi

Zip, I'm so sorry you lost your brother. While I can't say that I lost anyone, I had to send several people I was responsible for to either Iraq or Afghanistan (that's something Senior NCOs get ordered to do sometimes). I sweated their absences as if they were part of my family because, in a sense, they were.

Monday, at daybreak, I will lower my flag in honor of our fallen Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen. Your brother will be in my heart at that time.

Around here, Memorial Day is NOT something people forget the meaning of. At one time there were something like 5 Air Force bases in San Antonio, along with Ft Sam Houston and several camps in the surrounding area. This is a "military town" in a lot of ways. However, when I was stationed at Bergstrom AFB in Austin, TX, while people could be startled to find out "there's an Air Force base here?!!?", they still knew what Memorial Day was all about.

A long time ago, a columnist in Austin named Mike Kelley wrote a piece on Memorial Day. Two of his buddies from the Air Force were in the C5 that crashed as part of the "Baby Lift" out of Vietnam. He said that, while he missed his friends, Memorial Day always felt "young" because his friends would never get old. It gave him hope. I like that sentiment.

Sorry everyone here for the people you have lost in service to this country. I will be remembering my sister's classmate who was killed by an IED in Iraq last year.
