OK, so I searched on this, but did not find a relatively new post.

Got the blinking Q mark this weekend when rebooting my mbook after a web surfing crash. At home tonight, I inserted the Leopard disk / rebooted by holding...my hard drive does not show up. So I cannot rebless the system folder. Plugged in my external drive. Most recent time machine back ups is 11/11...

Is there any way to restore my system without trying to restore from 11/11? I am also worried that since no hard drive shows up that the drive is dead.

First try and select your HD from System Preferences>Startup Disk.

Can you boot from the external disk? (do you have a full OS installed on it?) If so, does Disk Utility see the internal disk? If not, you should also be able to run Disk Utility from the OS install DVD -- it's in a menu somewhere, I forget where -- before you have to actually do any installing. It might be able to repair software damage, if the disk is still physically good.

it gets worse...When I run disk utility I cannot find my HD. When I boot up from the CD, I do heard a clicking noise...I hope that is not the HD.

Any one have any thoughts?

Hold down the mouse button when you restart. Should force an eject.

Just so long as it's not obvious that you dropped it, inflicting the damage. My daughter's iBook had the logic board, hard drive and combo drive replaced under Apple Care at 2.5 years. They'll fix you right up.
