Have a new macbook pro lion
I changed my password to my username and then changed my username to something else, but noticed that in the finder my old username (now my password) is still being shown, so I figured that I hadn't changed my username correctly (I've since realised looking at a relative's new macbook pro that in fact the password is shown in the finder - see my related thread), so I went online got some instructions and went into the System Preferences - Users and enabled my root user and changed the old user name to the new one, it worked but guess what I now have 2 usernames when I start up the mac, both I can log into and they appear to be identical because when I log into one and create a file it appears in my other login too. But when I look at System Preferences - Users I only have one login. So far everything is working fine I just have the annoyance of 2 identical logins appearing at my startup screen, but I'm worried that this glitch will cause me some problems so I won't to get rid of one of the logins, but I can't remove it because it doesn't exist in my Users under System preferences!
Just to clarify this is what I did which caused the problem, let's pretend my original name was Scarlett and my password was also Scarlett and instead I wanted to change my user name to Tara but keep my password to Scarlett, this is what I did:
System Preferences - Users & Groups - Login Items - Join - Open Directory Utility - Directory Editor - clicked on Scarlett - Edit - Enable Root User
Then I changed everything in the list that said Scarlett to Tara, except for the one that said password I kept that at Scarlett
It worked but now I have 2 logins identical when I start up mac, but only one login shown in User and Groups
when I start mac one login says username Tara but the other login actually says Others
