hi all... hope this isn't too OT for this fora, but i have a quick question; my younger cousin purchased a 12" PB a few weeks back from a local Apple store, and bought it w/ his EDU discount. w/ the rumours about new PB's coming out now, he is thinking about trying to sell his and buying one of the newer 15" models as he's found the 12" resolution to be a bit too low for his needs.

is it Ok for him to sell his 12" PB to someone, even though it was purchased on the EDU discount? he came asking me and i am clueless as to whether there are any restrictions on EDU purchases, like warranty transfer and the like... any clarification would be great, he's been racking up creditcard debt like theres no tomorrow since getting into college, poor kid..

I've done it, and I don't think there are any problems doing so. The only downside is the fact that he can't buy a NEW PowerBook with the same discount. It's good for only purchase a year per product (one PB, one iBook, etc).

Sure, technically, the Edu discount is only good for one purchase/year. But I doubt it's too heavily enforced. Your cousin shouldn't have too much trouble buying another PB from the Educational store.

thx friends, i'll let him know, both about being able to sell it and not to expect another discount for a year... one other thing, does he need to disclose to any potential buyer that the machine was purchased w/ the EDU discount, or would they never even hear about it from Apple if sending it in for warranty work? is the machine "flagged" in some way..?

No, the machine wont be flagged, and if there is a problem he can tell teh truth: that the wants a new PB when they're released.

No problem there.

This sounds a bit dubious.... you can not purchase anything Education from an Apple store, you must use the online Education store. I have made numerous Education purchases.

As far as a second Educational purchase, he really only has to wait until July 1st becasue that's when the "Education" purchase cycles around.

Mind you I have never tried purchasing anything Education from an Apple store, just remembering numerous posts about the topic. I "guess" Apple could have changed their mind but I doubt it.

Tell your friend, good luck and he should sell his PB on eBay before the new ones come out.

When I've purchased my Macs from my university's bookstore, I get the education discount and all they do is check my student card. They don't consult with Apple to make sure I've only bought one Mac in the past year, as has been described earlier (I doubt the employees even know about this "rule").

As far as I know, there are no markings to identify a PB as educational discount-purchased.

So if your cousin's school computer shop only makes sure he's a student, what is stopping him from selling the first PB and buying a new one in the same year he bought the first one?

Just a note here... I purchased my powerbook from the Apple store in San Jose and only had to show my student ID to get the discount.

Nonsense.

You can buy Apple hardware with the educational discount from a) Apple online [no verification done AT ALL], b) Apple over the phone [no verification done AT ALL], c) Apple retail store [they Xerox your student ID], or d) from your school bookstore.

You can buy Apple software with the educational discount from any of the above except the Apple retail stores; for some reason they won't discount software.

The way it was explained to me at the Apple Store here when I bought my 15" was that the EDU discount only applied to "Apple Branded Hardware" in the retail store, but anything sold by Apple on the online store. I'm not sure how it would work at my university book store, I didn't even bother with them.

Yes, you get the educational price on hardware, but not software. Not sure why that is though.

Incorrect. They have K-12 discounts as well. Check the Online education store (the link's at the bottom right of the main page) and go through the steps.

Always first check with your school bookstore, as sometimes Apple makes special deals directly with Universities. However, barring special deals, the Apple Online Edu prices on hardware are the same as Apple (brick and mortar) Store Edu prices and school bookstore prices on hardware.

No, incorrect. K-12 faculty OR higher ed students + faculty. There are no discounts for 5th grade students.... There are home-school discounts, but there's a bunch of paperwork to supply to Apple.

You can buy Apple software with the educational discount from any of the above except the Apple retail stores; for some reason they won't discount software.
The software is not discounted because often the Edu editions have a different box, different license or different SKU numbers. Too much for the Apple Stores to stock, I'm told. For example, the Edu version of Adobe Photoshop has a different splash screen on launch, has a different license in the package, and the box has an Educational Version label on it.

They do not. The only time I ever had to give proof was for the educational discount at an Apple store. Thank goodness I had an old faculty id tag in my car. Total impulse buy.

As for online purchases, I have never been asked for any verification.

The online discount is for any Apple product. Very few third-party products offer educational discounts through Apple. Most non-Apple software can be purchased at discount from education software specialists such as JourneyEd.com -- they will require you to fax proof of enrollment or employment, mind you.

The BEST place to buy powerbooks and whatnot if you're in college is through your college's store, especially in the bigger ones.

Because there's the "technology fees" in tuition, well that's partially where you can get them back. Sometimes thanks to site agreements you can get licensed software on the cheap (and hardware too, apple stuff tends to have 'specials' sometimes).

Why defraud a good thing? If you're a student, take advantage of the savings. If not, then in fairness you should pay full price. I personally take advantage of the student savings being a starving college student, and I'd hate to see that privilege taken away because people took advantage of it.

Just my two pennies.

You can still use the education discount if you were just accepted into a university, it says so on the Apple Store EDU webpage. You can also bring in your acceptance letter to any Apple Store as well to take advantage of it.

So you are morally correct to buy more than one system (against the rules) yet a non-student is morally incorrect to purchase even one (also against the rules)?

Just trying to understand your "logic"

Mr. Fantastic,

I'm not here to judge anyone. Hell, I'll even give the guy some credit. He's at least conspiring to get a quality machine, and not some lame virus laden, monotonous, Windoze shod, uncreative beige box. (I'm sure you know the type).

My point was rather... it seems sort of silly to publicly admit of such questionable actions. If anything, why not conduct such activity in private, away from the scrutinizing eye of MacNN readers. You'd never want to tip off any Apple employees who no doubt read this site for free market research on their business.

For reference, there's nothing that says you can't ever buy more than one machine. It's just stated (I believe) that you can only buy one per calendar school year.

"I pity the fool who accidently forks up the student discount."

You have a Honda S2000, and you're in high school? That's a $30,000 car and you're talking about saving $200 on a Powerbook. Life IS rough these days, isn't it.

And for reference, you can be in Kindergarten and get a discount. Simply look up your school in the search and purchase to your heart's content. If some reason your school is not listed... blame the school, not Apple.

Still trying to understand how a "starving student" can spend his evenings at Hustler yet condemn a possible switcher for saving a few big blinds through the Education discount.

i'm a freshman, 15 and i go to temple city high school. and i don't own an S2000. i just post at www.s2ki.com quite a lot and have made friends all over the world (tokyo, new york, northern california, canada, etc). i've been invited to S2000 events where 130+ S2000s have showed up and people have enough respect for me to give me a 3-4 hour ride in their S2000. i'd love to own one, but it's not for me, not now. i have $2000 dollars saved up for a powerbook/powermac/ibook/imac and parents are willing to help a teeny bit. i work my butt off for everything. people get silent A's in class, while I try to liven the class up by volunteering and cheering the class up. People try to cheat during swimming by skipping laps and making up fake cramps. i get a lot of cramps and i swim through it. i injured my pelvic girdle 3 times and i still swim the next day, and here are people ditching practices. i go by the saying "there are no shortcuts in life." if i believe in something, i work my ass off for it. getting a mac is something i believe in, and if i can get something in return that will make the experience more rewarding i'd be willing to take it. and coincidentally the ipod mini is just about that price.
