Did someone manage to take a picture at the exact explosion moment, or did it just burn for a while? Maybe he was trying to open it by stabbing it repeatedly (flashback to iPod shuffle)

"The damn thing was on fire and produced several explosions for more than five minutes".
Guess they don't have fire extinguishers in Japan.

It's part of the new anti-theft/hackers software they added.

People don't realize just how much energy is packed into a Lithium-Ion battery. If something goes wrong, all that energy can be released quickly in the form of heat.
In other words, there's probably nothing wrong with Dell. Instead, we should be investigating battery manufacturers for releasing cells that sit so precariously on the line between high-energy storage and explosion.

Very true. While I'm sure Dell does some testing of thier batteries, who could have forsaw this event?

Ya I think it is safe to assume it is the battery, I mean what else would explode? The RAM?
Anywho Apples powerbook 5300 was given a bad rap because of the 3 fires, they were all caused by the Sony batteries.
The recent iBook and Shuffle fires were also because of the battery.
All the exploding cellphones is because of cheap 3rd party batteries.

Hey, I think it's only fair considering all the flack Apple got for the PowerBook 5300 exploding, which never even happened out in the wild - just in the factory.

True, but dell would overnight a new one.
If it was a Mac, Apple would first say it is within specs and then make them sign a gag order if they wanted a new one.

Heh, that's why they picked us as mods!
We read a lot and keep track of all the goings-on in the tech world. And then put it through the Common-Sense-O'Matic.

Yeah, "multiple explosions" sounds a lot like different cells shorting and "going off" over a few minutes. And as tooki pointed out, this kind of battery is capable of storing a LOT of energy. There have been a lot of instances of idiots shorting their car batteries and blowing THEM up, resulting in not only the electrical energy being released, but the chemical energy in the built up hydrogen gas AND (bonus here!) sulfuric acid everywhere! Yay! Batteries are very unforgiving sometimes.
Note also that most laptop batteries are built from cells manufactured by a very small number of battery manufacturers. That Dell's battery may have been made of components that go in a MacBook Pro battery...

Eh...I was considering saying the same thing earlier but I figured I'd let the thread die. Since it didn't, I'll say that if he had something constructive to ad, that'd be one thing, but no. Oh well.

I think that was a reference to digg.com as it seems we are having a lot of people posting on here what they read there.

Man... a burning notebook could be such a useful feature...
...in a conference and you need to end your presentation in a memorable way...? Just set your notebook to explode...!!!
I'd buy it....

Ya it would totally look like a rock concert if it wasn't Japanese men in suites.

Ooh, pretty fire...
Does no one in Japan know how to use a fire extinguisher? I really don't think that they should have just let it burn like that for "several minutes"... Then again, that's just me.
I wonder who manufactured the faulty battery?

Guess they don't have fire extinguishers in Japan.
They do, but they're a pain in the butt to buy out of vending machines when theres an emergency.

Coincidental only in that by coincidence all laptops use batteries, and iBooks, being laptops, have batteries. It can happen to any brand if the batteries are bad.
