I started using Web Sharing w/ OS 8.6 a little while ago with my DSL connection, and now I'm hooked. I love having a webserver on my computer. Now I've ordered OS X and was wondering if there are any servers yet (similar to Web Sharing or not) for OS X, and also FTP and/or telnet servers.

They're all built right into the OS! All three--FTP, Telnet, and an Apache web server--can be turned on by checking boxes in the System Prefs app.

If you're any sort of web geek like me, you'll want to edit the apache.confs file. This is found in /Library/WebServer/Configuration/apache.conf (make a backup first!).

The file is pretty self explanitory - the only changes I always make are allowing CGI scripts to be executed everywhere, and enabling SSI (.shtml files).. funny that this isn't turned on by default.

Here's a neat trick: create a "public_html" folder in your user folder (/Users/name/public_html) - then go to http://servername/~username/ and viola!
