Gonna turn wussy on ya!

We have a baby girl due in eight weeks but we have no firm ideas about names yet. We thought we did... but it turns out we don't. Here's our list so far (in no order):

Georgia (overdone?)
Tia
Mia
Sienna
Louisa
Amber
Lara
Laura
Emily
Emma

She will have a middle name, so we are working on a good 1-2 combination. It has to be feminine and abbreviate to something feminine as well. I thought I would harness the combined (and considerable ) brain power of the MacNN Lounge Lizards to find the most preferred combo (or any other girl's names you really like, so we can steal them. hehe).

So step right up and name that baby!

I have always liked... Sarah.

P.D.

P.S. I have always disliked the name Katrina! I had a bad experience with one in elementary school, It makes me cringe, so sharp, eew. it's just me, I would probably not even date a girl with that name even if she is very very HOT! it's kinda sad.

We named out 14 month old daughter Amy. I like it alot, compared to some of the freaky names people are using these days. Nice and simple, but a nice name for a little girl - we get compliments all the time on it. We have a rule - our kid's names will never be more than 2 syllables.

Our next one (if it's a daughter) will likely be Erin. As you can see, we like the short names...

BTW I won't mind if you use our names. Just PayPal me $5 and we'll call it even.

EDIT - oh, Sarah is a good name for sure. If we hadn't named our dog Sarah before having kids, that would have been our daughter's name for sure.

Tia Maria?

Laura Louisa? (Though I'm not a fan of 'Louisa', personally)

Tia Amber?

I like Tia and Laura as first names... Lara too.

Face Ache - I would say congrats now, but I'll save it for another 8 weeks

EDIT: Murbot: Amy is a beautiful name.

These are my faves, esp. Emily. I went off on a coffee-fueled rant about people giving their kids stupid names these days just to be different. I guess I'm a bit of a classicist for names, making up some dumb shite or calling your kid after your maternal grandparent "just because" bugs me.

Ultimately, I think it depends on what the last name is, something has to sound good together.

Rachael Meredith and Rebecca Suzanne were my family's choices. Stephanie's nice, Louisa will open her up for a world of taunting... I second the Amy notion, too. ... and that's all.

Then he was born in Perth while my Gran was dying in London so he got the name that her father and husband shared*, which was James. That's fine with me because it has a few variables James, Jamie, Jim, Jimmy. Anyway she was very happy and got to see an emailed photo before she went. And I figured a little last minute haggling to get a guardian angel wouldn't hurt either.

Cover your bases.

All great names so far BTW. I've known too many Sarahs. And Rachaels. Katherine is good. I'm mulling over that one. It's versatile. I think murbot is winning so far though. Amy is a beautiful name. And you can't screw it up. That's on my list. How much do you want for it again?

...

I'd list off all my female friends names but they'd prolly be pissed...

but i will say one thing... elizabeth can be chopped up into many different nicknames (liz, beth, eliza, lizzy,) and tiffany can be mutated into whatever they want (tiffy, toofy, toofas, etc)

I'd have to say something for names with accent marks, such as Rene (actually can be a name for both a boy or a girl).

I've had the name Nicholl Rainn all set for my girl since I was about 12...then I go and end up engaged to a woman named Nicole. So there went that name. If we have a girl I think she'll be Ashleigh Rose, but I guess we'll see how it goes. Congrats, at the very least, whatever name she gets...

Oh, I think Amy is a great name too. First girl I ever kissed was one
Then her wallet got stolen and she had to change her name to Eve. And she's dating a guy named Adam. Ha ha...'cause that never gets old.

I'm partial to Alexis (my daughter's name) and Anna. I originally wanted to name my daughter Ragan but the whole family balked. They all asked if it was for Ronald Ragan, or Ragan from The Exorcist. Keep the monogram of your final choice in mind. You'd hate to give her a monogram like A.S.S. or something like that. Just food for thought.

Yeah!

And remember that the name is for your kid, not you. You see a lot of parents name their kids ridiculous names because THEY (the parents) liked the name, or makes them feel pretentious, or other selfish reasons. But names can really affect how you feel about yourself. Especially kids, who can take things like that real hard.

Look at me - do you know how many times I was called "BRussell sprout, BRussell sprout" as a kid?

I've always preferred names that can be shortenned like Annabelle or Annabella which can be shortenned to Anna or just plain Ann. Isabell, Izabell, Izabella also a nice name. Those have a semi-sophisticated sound to them.

I tend to lean away from names like "Mia, or Tia" too simple IMHO. I's be more likely to respect a person with a more sophisticated name (you gotta think about when she's 20 or 30 yrs old too) somehow a 40 yr old CEO with a name like "Mia or Tia" doesn't seem to command the respect level for some reason or other.

Whatever you name her, just please spell it correctly!!!! I work at a low income public elementary school, and it drives me nuts how parents will misspell their own children's names. Most of the time they do it on purpose to be cute, but I know that a number of parents have done it unintentionally.

(ex. Daesi, Cristyn, Caitlynn, Nicolle)

As far as suggestions go, I am reading the Iliad right now and I think you should name your daughter Helen, after the most beautiful woman of all time.

Perhaps Celeste, then? It's pretty close.

I stand by my vote for Irina, though. Sorry for stealing it from you, nonhuman, but I had to. It's my girlfriend's, you see, and in my never-ending quest to be As Wretchedly Sappy As Possible, I had no choice but to suggest it.

Which isn't to say that I don't think it's an absolutely beautiful name.

Katie's and Katy's are always those beautiful girls that lived down the block who wouldn't hesitate to play football in the street with you. Ah, Katy Adams, whither didst thou go?

Sarah is a good name, based on the fact that I had a crush on a girl named sarah from kindergarten through highschool. I'd probably still have a crush on her if we hadn't parted company many years ago. Maybe I would've worked up the nerve to ask her out, after 20 years.

Rebecca is good, too (Becca, becky). I like Grey, as well, but i don't think I'd have the heart to name a daughter that. Maybe a son.

This makes me chuckle because the last girl I had a serious crush on was named Sarah, and the one thats driving me nuts right now is named Rebecca. Sarah Marie, and Rebecca Jane respectively. I always thought that the Sarah Marie combo was really pretty, dunno why. Rebecca Jane is kinda plain (har har plain jane) anyway, she still rocks my world.

My sister named her daughters Cayle Madison, and Darby Grace. I still think she's weird. Oh and her name is Celene Amelia. I like Celene a lot, but it seems kinda out of reach since its taken. I have always liked s sounding names. Sarah, Celene, and I suppose thats one reason that I like Celes. I don't relly like Celeste that much though. The hard t ending bugs me, as I don't think it would roll off the tounge with a middle name too well. I wonder if my 3 am posting makes any sense. ah well

I have two daughters, Heather Lauren and Haley Michele, but I also like the names Hillary Anne (before Clinton) and Hannah Robin (though my brother always used to say it sounds like a cartoon company.)

Other names I like even though you can't abbreviate all of them:
Shelby
Jordan
Taylor
Madison
Dallas
Emily Anne
Abigail
Summer
Grace
Amelia which can be shortened to Amy
and Sara Rose, a very special name.

Of course, I'm kind of partial to Kacey, too. I wish it was my real name.
kacey

P.S. For the record, there is no wrong way to spell a name.
There are no spelling rules for names. You can choose the more
common spelling or opt for a unique one, but it's your child which
gives you the right to spell his or her name any way you like!

Well, our daughter's name was going to be Rachel right up till the ride to the hospital where my wife said she wanted to name a girl Kaley. Of course I agreed!

So now we have Kaley Chistina. 11 years old this year.

I'm suprised none of the Mac Lovers (self included) here suggested "Lisa".

Lisa Marie, Lisa Macintosh.... Hmm, guess your limited with middle names with that one.

Emma, Emily, Lily are lovely traditional names. For less traditional I like Lara, Sahara, Sierra, Devon.

I also rather like Nevada. Only don't be like the sister of a friend of mine who named her kids Nevada and Montana Almost as unbearable as naming three girls Rose and Lily and Daisy. Or as a Canadian, Alberta and Manitoba
