well Im getting an iPod for xmas, because even if there are new updates, there is nothing else I want to be added to it. Sure a price decrease would be good, but wouldn't apple reduce them before xmas so people will buy them?
Didnt apple recently update the iPod? (within 6 months)

The iPod won't change any time soon. Apple is planning on selling an @$$ load of them during the holidays, and even they wouldn't screw their customers by making any sort of drastic changes anytime soon.

Price drops is the only thing I would expect, if anything, anytime soon. The iPod is the top dog as is, period. The only real competitions is the nomad zen, but that is only because of the price and personally I would pay the extra for the iPod.

Well if you get anything other then the 5 gig I think it would be worth it.

Why do you say that? I think it has it's advantages...

-The 5 gig version is less prone to hangs if one uses it for jogging or workouts.

-At $210 (refurbished) it works out to be cheapest per mb.

-It has the moving wheel which many find more desirable and intuitive

-It will hold 1000 songs...more than enough for many

-Great low end model for the budget conscious.

I've been wanting to by an iPod for a long time now, but one feature I would really love would be a microphone, so I was interested also in the eDigital Odyssey 100 MP3 player (http://www.edigital-store.com/odyssey1000.html ).

If it wasnt for the mic I would buy an iPod because of the Firewire, but are there other reasons I should take an iPod instead? Or reasons to get an Odyssey 100 instead?

I know the Odyssey 100 isn't available yet, but I'm planning on waiting until the iPod line gets updated anyway. And if I got an iPod I'd use my 15% Student ADC discount, so the prices are more similar.

With all due respect, I think the Odyssey looks like crap. Part of the iPod's brilliance is it's elegant and intuitive interface coupled with the industrial design.
That plus I believe I read on some other thread that the Odyssey is vapourware and that Apple had their legal department after them.

I agree, I don't like the look at all.

I know I've been waiting for the Odyssey to be released for a long time, I think it was supposed to be out in September? I hadn't heard that it was because of Apple, though.

For little more you get a case, a firewire cover, thinner, better headphones a remote and twice the gigs.

Sure if you can't afford it go nuts with the 5 giger though, but it is dated the second you buy it.

Why is the 5 gig less prone to skipping?

Apple replaced the wheel as it was the only moving part and is prone to breaking.

Well, I think they all will be dated in a couple of months
The $140 difference ($350 vs $210) is not worth a remote ($35) and headphones (get some sony headphones). Firewire cover is not a big deal nor is the the thinner casing.
And of course I already mentioned the lack of need for greater storage.
To each his own I guess, and it does boil down to cost for me.
As far as the 5 gig being less prone to skipping, don't know technically why, but it has been reported here at MacNN quite often that this is the case.

The "wheel" is there, but it just doesn't turn like the original iPods. It works like a trackpad.

the wheel is a trackpad but it's a special circular one

Anyway, I considered the Odyssey player myself, but these are the many reasons I didn't get it:

#1: It's ugly as @$^&)#&
#2: it is USB
#3: It has that awful little scrollwheel (though its 'easier' to use it's far uglier)

I prefer the sheer elegance of the ipod, it's so fancy and I was downright impressed when I opened the box and saw how fancily it was presented.

It feels like you're not just buying a music player, but you get the 'treatment' to go with it!

I ordered the 10Gb, IMO thats the best for what I need.
5Gb storage I have nearly 4Gb already so hmm, 20Gb just seems a mad amount of songs and also apparently its a larger case?
Is it true iPods get very hot?

Apple just announced limited edition Madonna, Tony Hawks, Beck, and No Doubt iPods. Same machine with some sigs on the back. $49 more minus $29 "rebate" so $20 more for having an artist's sig on the back of your machine.

Hmm...I was just about to plop down $ for an iPod but maybe I'll wait till after MWSF. I was looking at the 5 giger anyways and perhaps we might be in store for a price drop. Probably not much but even $50 across the line would be nice.

I'd love to have one over the holidays but something tells me that a revised iPod with a small built in FM transmitter is around the corner. Well at least I hope it is.

Forget about an iPod for Christmas... if you really want one, get one during all the after Christmas sales.
You're probably right...but what am I supposed to play with over the holidays?...on second thought..don't answer that.

I think the Odyssey is sharp...I don't know how anyone can say its ugly never mind ugly as $%#@. I do hope they get thier asses sued however.

And the microphone is key...especially for creative types.

I'm perfectly happy with my 5 GB iPod. All the new updates offer are bigger hard drives, and who needs 'em anyway? I'll probably update if Apple releases a new-gen iPod with a color screen (like when I posted something a while ago with an iPod playing Quake 3 Arena).

So my sis got the 5 gig today. I was surprised to see that the top corners are very sharp, not like cut sharp but sharp none the less. Did Apple smooth these out in the 10's and 20's?

"Hello, what have we here?
