I'm configuring a new MacPro. Apple wants $300 for a second 500gb drive. Looking around I found a Western Digital 500gb (8.7 seek, 7200rpm, 16mb cache) for $179. No other specs given on the Apple site for their HD's. Is there a $120 difference? The drive will be used for audio.

Thanks for any help.

There's no reason to buy Apple hard drive or RAM upgrades unless you're buying an AIO and the upgrade in question is difficult.

The drive/s inside won't be made by Apple. They'll be made by a major hard drive manufacturer (i.e. Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital, etc). So, just choose the cheapest hard drive option, and buy your drives elsewhere (providing you're comfortable fitting them yourself - which isn't hard).

There's no reason to buy a hard drive from Apple, but that WD isn't a particularly good deal.

Buy a 500GB Seagate for $145 with a 5 year warranty (same specs, 7200RPM/8.5ms seek/16MB cache)

Thank you folks. Think I'll get two of those Seagates for the price of one from Apple. Thanks for the link.
