In playing around with the iChat AV beta for only a few minutes, I couldn't find a way to connect to a NetMeeting computer elsewhere in our office.

Has anyone succeeded in getting an iChat H.323-based session going?

iChat a/v connection is currently Mac to Mac only, but as soon as others start to copy Apple, Apple will try to connect to them also.
Wait until Microsoft copies video conferencing from Apple, and it will eventually be made work then.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

There is no H.323 capability in iChat AV. Please provide feedback at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html if you require this functionality. Please be sure to include impact, reasons you require it, etc.

I don't know anything about H.323 but judging from Steve's comments today during his keynote, I gather that they need something that can piggy-back off of the current AIM network, such that:

1. ZERO SETUP
2. ZERO CONFIG
3. Integrate with IM network (leveraging easy access to people you know without needing ip addresses, etc.)

Does H.323 meet those requirements? How about Microsoft NetMeeting?

Plus, those are existing solutions that Apple must know about. So, why then would Steve talked about future companies copying their solution, then trying to make them interoperable. Sounds like Apple doesn't want to try to integrate with existing solutions because they suck.

[BTW, wrong forum...]

I just did a tcpdump to see which protocol iChat was using. It does use SIP which is an IETF standard. This is REALLY nice. It should be able to interoperate with MSN messenger which does support SIP too on WinXP.
Noone use Netmeeting anymore. H.323 is really not that much important.

SIP was the way to go, and it's nice Apple took the right decision

You can't - this version ONLY supports mac-mac video conferencing. A future version might support the PC....

This assume that Apple adds a way to manually enter the SIP address in iChat. But technically speaking, it should work...

Maybe it could work the other way, with the non-iChat client sending a request to the iChat client. Think that would work?
