I live next to a nice older woman who is a fine neighbor in many respects. No problems most of the time. Well, there is one problem. She has two small dogs who she lets roam around outside when she's out in the front. And twice now in the last few months I've found little dog droppings on my lawn where they like to roam.

I don't want to make a big issue out of it, but I don't like picking up after other people's dogs, either, and I certainly don't like it on my lawn. MacNN, what's the best way to resolve this problem?

No. Wrap the sh1t up in newspaper, put it outside of her front door, ring the doorbell, light the newspaper and then leg it.

The way you handle this will set the tone for all dealings with the neighbor. It is better to handle it in a non-confrontational manner than to be aggressive. If she's a jerk, you'll know what to do next - take a big ol' dump on her lawn and blame someone else's dog.

I saw something in a catalog recently that is a motion-activated device for lawns. It'll make a high-pitched dog-annoying noise to scare them off your lawn. Not sure if it works though.

First I'd ask her. I don't mind if my neighbor's dog craps in my yard but my neighbor also has a bag to pick it up. I understand he is just trying to crap..

Secondly depending on how the conversation goes I'd get animal control out there because in Mississippi that is animal trespassing and it's a $400 ticket. I don't think anything secret should be done about it, just go out and talk to her. I learned that if you actually go to the person, make the problem known the problem usually goes away for a while.

Yeah talk to her. Most dog owners are responsible people. You can't always control where yur dog likes to poop but you can clear up after it.

If she goes all douche on you then you can escalate.

We had the same issue a while back. I confronted the dogs owner mid poop and was told to f88k off. So I picked the poop up and followed him home and left it on his doorstep along with a note explaining that he shouldn't let it happen again.

He did so the next lot went through his letterbox with a note explaining that the police and local dog warden had been given his address.

That ended it.

You could try befriending the dogs and train them to crap on her lawn, how’s that?

My parent's neighbors used to flick cig butts in our yard. My Dad collected them all and put them on their front porch and he also called animal control because they don't care for their dog (stays in the back yard, malnourished and they drop food from a 14 foot high porch if they ever feed it). A week later, they built a privacy fence and put the inside part of the fence on OUR side to make it look like we built it!

I would talk to her first and see what happens. If not, I would take measures so that her dogs cannot get into your yard. I wouldn't escalate.

In the worst case, the idea with the motion-activated sonic barriers (whatever they're called) don't sound too bad.

Invite the lady over for dinner and talk to her.

The dog should be the main course.

Bingo. We have a winner. This is exactly what I'd do. If that doesn't work. I'm with Rumor on the bear trap.

Depending on the size of the dogs (small makes me think rat dog size) a rat trap may be more reliable than a bear trap.

It's interesting how a large percentage of MacNN threads relate to steal.

Let us know how the neighbor responds to the request, Big Mac. I'm kind of half hoping that she gets douchey so that we can come up with creative ways to go mental on her ass.

Twice in a few months dogs have pooped in your yard?

I think this belongs in the "just deal with it" category.

If you want to be passive aggressive (ie, not confront the poop issue but still get the dog off the yard) go to home depot lawn section, get a bunch of those little yellow poison warning flags. Then knock on her door, and let her know you've started using some really high-powered chemicals on your lawn, and you are worried her dog will get his widdle paws in it. Maybe she should invest in an invisible fence or a leash to keep him in her yard? Said with all sweetness and have a great day.

You all are crazy. I was just going to suggest getting an elephant and teaching it to poop in the neighbor's yard. Shock and awe, my friends.

Or run over the dog with your car and blame it on the elephant. Problem solved.

I've seen something similar in a Smarthome catalog. The device was a motion detector connected to your garden hose. It would follow anything moving and spray it. It was designed to keep rabbits out of your garden.

So far I think the idea of the lawn flags marking poison are the best bet. The other ideas made me laugh more though.

Sounds like a HOA. They like to have the finished side facing out, where the rest of the neighborhood can see it. As for the crap, have you considered a catapult?

I sprinkle my lawn with a homemade mixture of cayenne, chili, and mustard powder as well to scare the dogs off.

Overkill, that is. The ejected cartridge case would probably kill a medium sized dog if it hit him...

On a more serious note, what about just going up to the nice lady and saying "had you noticed that your dogs like to poo in my yard? I'd appreciate it if you tried to keep them from doing that." Funny how direct honesty works wonders sometimes.
