Stickies asks you where do you want it to be saved.
You can either save it as an text or plain text file.
If you simply close the app, the sticky note will be shown again when you open Stickies.

I use 10.1.5 at work and all my stickies data vanished after I installed a 256MB RAM chip. I learned the hard way that you shouldn't keep important data on stickies unless you save them constantly. The RAM thing could be coincidence I guess.

I couldn't find a backup feature in Stickies so I ended up coming with my own. I used crontab to automatically backup my stickies data file every hour during my shift. Now I can access backup files if I need to.
