You know ketchup has like bugs and dirt and other stuff in it? Trust me, Del Monte picks the tomatoes about 2 miles from my house and them shipps them to the processing plant. I see what goes in there.

Dip. If there's some mayo around too, that's good.

Um, wouldn't the processing include washing them?
Dipping's the way to go. I like to have control over the amount of ketchup on each of my fries.

I've never had vinegar with fries, but that might not be so bad. Recently I've been putting ketchup and mustard on my fries.

Ever heard of salt and vinegar potato chips? It's the same thing, the potato is just in a different form.

i'm picturing a little dish of pure vinegar and dipping them in... am I right? Does McDonalds offer this in the UK?
I can hardly handle the smell.

I put ketchup on one side covering some of my Freedom fries.
I pick up the dry Freedom fries and dip them into the ketchup until I am left with the Freedom fries that are covered with ketchup.

If you are a "dipper", do you take one fry at a time or 2 or 3?
I do...and I dip for every bite. I love ketchup!

Vinegar on fries is kind of like sniffing gas: You wouldn't want to drink it but it can be quite enjoyable.
That said I think the common method is to sprinkle it. Dipping would likely result in a soggy mess, particularly with the larger home-style ones.
I'm not a huge fan of ketchup but when I have it I dip.
Oh, and the perfect topping for fries is Poutine... or rather Poutine brings french friesto their greatest height

Vinegar on fries is actually really good. I tried it at Nathan's (anyone else have Nathan's around them?) and it was quite good.
And dip the fries in the ketchup. Cheese spread on top... Now my mouth is watering..

One of my ex-girlfriends used to put gravy on her fries.
I should have recognized this for what it was - a sign of serious mental problems.

You apparently missed the part where they dump the tomatoes into a series of three or four huge vats of water...

Have you tried it?
BTW, it has to be malt vinegar. Malt vinegar has flavor, much different from white vinegar. English chips really aren't like fries either.

I like the ketchup on the side, usually.
When I was in high school, we had a lunch truck that would put ketchup, salt and pepper right on the fries and it was really good. I haven't had it like that since, then.
Mayo is good, too, for dipping but I've never tried vinegar.
x.

French fries aren't French at all -- as Spheric Harlot said, they're Belgian.
"French fries" is short for "french fried potatoes" -- in the culinary arts "frenching" means to cut into long, narrow strips.
If malt vinegar is available, I have my fries with lots of salt and vinegar. If they don't have malt vinegar, then I just use salt. Often, I'll add pepper, too. Old Bay seasoning is also yummy.
To anyone who says "eww, vinegar!" but likes ketchup: read the darned ingredients in ketchup. A large part of it is vinegar.
Dammit. Now I feel like driving downtown and getting Boardwalk Fries...

Stick some of the fries right in on the burger, close to the meat and ketchup and whatever other sauces/condiments you've added.
BTW, has anyone else had potato chips (crisps for some nationalities) that are ketchup-flavored? I was a little wary at first, but they actuallly taste pretty good, like cold fries doused in ketchup.

A few points: when you use Ketchup that's all you can taste but that's okay since most American French fries are nasty. Good European pommes frites are wonderful with mayonaise. English chips are bigger and more like American steak fries and taste marvelous with malt vinegar and some light salting.

Funny, I was just thinking about this very question at lunch today. I'm not kidding.
A little ketchup is good, but only a little. I like vinegar as well, but I like a lot of it and that tends to make things soggy. Mayo - nah. There's a Belgian fries place in SF that has a lengthy menu of mayo-type sauces but it's all a bit too fussy for me. Fries + gravy = heaven on Earth.
What's good is mustard on fried fish. Plain old cheap yellow mustard is best. I always have to ask for it and people look at me funny, but I can't imagine anything better - it seems like a natural combination to me. Sometimes they bring Dijon instead. When that happens I show them my Ruger and gently suggest that if they don't bring the cheap stuff right away, anything could happen. This usually works.

The Crisp icons on my site include ketchup flavor, also pickled onion which rule.
