The iMac G3 was discontinued in 2003, so the letter you had with a purple logo wasn't fake.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Since he knew it was misplaced and he didn't hand it to the proprietor of the establishment it was misplaced at, it IS "stealing" under California law.

Apple still sends reps business cards with the old fonts and logo colours. Plus, if you don't think that Gizmodo haven't heard from Apple, then that's a bit insane. You can bet that Apple and Gizmodo have been in contact.

Doesn't the corporate headquarters itself use one of the old translucent logos on the entry sign?

One thread was on in the lounge and got moved here to die.

Personally I think this story is bigger then simply being about the next iPhone and should be on the Lounge where it would actually get traffic.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Nope.

They had a red gumdrop logo and Apple Garamond until 2002.

Then they switched to solid blue logo and Myriad.

Heh. At least in much of the mainstream media, there seems to be more coverage of the process of the iPhone 3G HD outing than the specs of the device itself.

Curiously, just about nobody is calling it fake/shopped now, except a few geeks on Mac forums.

I think the fact that most of the new specs were pretty much expected to come, its not a huge story on that front. The bigger story is how this came about and how Gizmodo wound up with it, as well as how they handled the situation.

My personal opinion is that if Gizmodo wants to be seen as a serious journalistic organization, they screwed up. If they want to be seen as a bunch of geek bloggers who are out to get page links, they did the right thing. There's so many things that are odd about this whole thing that it can't be clean. As Andy Ihnatko said in his article, there really isn't a large payoff to the readers for outing the next iPhone so early. And that's been proven by the fact that few people are talking about the specs and the phone, and more are talking about Gizmodo. So it just looks to me like Gizmodo did this for themselves alone... for money. Apple gets hurt, the readers don't get much, but Gizmodo gets paid. Gross.

Meh. Some might say Andy Ihnatko is just miffed that Giz geeks are stealing his online thunder. In fact, the cynic might suggest his blog on this is partially to cash in Giz's 15 minutes of fame.

Or it could be that Giz is being rewarded for their questionable behavior.

Personally, i stopped reading the site after they got kicked out of CES for being assholes.

True, one could make that assertion from Andy's article. Or any other article criticizing Gizmodo's behavior in this whole event. Gizmodo is proclaiming to have "beaten Apple at their own game". They are beating their chests over this, which I just find unprofessional. But like I referred to earlier, I don't know how Gizmodo wants to be seen by their readers. As a serious journalistic outlet or as just a tech blog that is out to get page hits by any means necessary. Personally, I'd like them to be serious journalists, but it doesn't seem like they see themselves that way. They've suddenly fallen into the tabloid rag category in my mind. I doubt I'll be reading their site anymore.

I'm sure I'm just inferring here, but does it seem odd that they have shut down their comments system for a full day because of too much traffic from their big scoop? Before they shut it down, they were getting some high criticism from their readers for this.

So much fishiness... but I could just be reading this whole thing entirely the wrong way. At least right now its just not sitting right with me.

Funny. I've always considered Gizmodo basically a gadget pr0n site. So here's some Giz gadget porn:

Big battery? How does it compare?

The specs are 3.7 Volts, 5.25 Watt-hours

Well, the iPod touch's battery is about the size of a nickel, so I'd say that is pretty darn huge for this device.

I was looking online for iPhone 3GS replacement batteries, and they are 4.5 Watt-hour. So that would be 1200 mAh.

The iPhone 3G HD prototype battery is 5.25 Wh / 3.7 V = 1400 mAh.

That's a 17% improvement in juice, but who knows if the new iPhone uses more or less power. Same goes for iPhone OS 4.0.

You do gotta wonder, especially seeing that iPod touch picture above, if this thing is legit and they really did shrinky-dink the internals, the next iPod touch is either going to have killer battery life or be crazy-thin.

I could have swore I read in Macworld that they were astonished by the 1G iPod touch's battery life "considering it's coming from something the size of a nickel" or the like... Maybe that was the nano?

OS 4.0 right now uses approximately a billion times more power than 3.1.3 did. I used to have to charge my iPod every week, now it's dead by the time I go to bed every day.

I don't think the larger battery means we are all getting 17% better battery life. This new iphone has some nice new e equipment in it like 2 microphones, a flash, 2 cameras (1 prob) 5mp, higher Rez screen and faster CPU (assumed). Plus iPhone 4.0's multitasking. All those things don't come for free without a battery hit.

We can all hope and assume that apple has been doing lots of tweaks to the power management to at least have the same battery life as the 3GS or at least a tiny bit better.

Plus now they are going to have to list talk time as "Voice" and "video chat" separately.
Video chat on or off 3G makes a difference too.

Oh boy that's gonna be fun.

Daring Fireball: Gizmodo and the Prototype iPhone

According to Gizmodo, one of the barcodes attached to the unit read “N90_DVT_GE4X_0493”. According to several sources (of mine) familiar with the project, “N90” is Apple’s codename for the fourth-generation GSM iPhone, slated for release this June or July. “DVT” stands for “design verification test”, an Apple production milestone. The DVT milestone is very late in the game; based on this, I now believe that this unit very closely, if not exactly, resembles what Apple plans to release.

It is a very pretty shape. I'm sure the final design will change some things such as the seem. I'm now waiting to see what the next iPhone brings to the table before I switch over to the HTC Incredible.

What is all the fuss over the seem? there is ONE seem on there that seems out of place (the one on the top). It needs the 2 seems on the bottom half for the way ti was designed.

Everyone always needs one silly little thing to fixate on. It's not a big deal.

I don't think anyone here is making a big deal about anything. I said I didn't like them, so what? I always thought of Apple as designing clean-looking products, and this looks like a bit of a departure.

But really I don't care in the least, since I won't be getting one (3Gs is a year old, and no way am I buying one out of contract).

The only things that are a departure are the fact the glass screen isn't flush with the aluminum banding and the seems™. The return to aluminum is welcome, however, and IMO it's not a huge deal whether or not the phone is ergonomic (curved back vs. flat). If Apple truly cared about ergonomics they'd have rethought the Magic Mouse and rounded the corners on the unibody laptops.

It seams that you're correct, although like I said, seamingly one would think that the seems would be gone in the final version.

How would you guys consider the experience on the iPhone 3GS vs. the iPhone 3G, for internet surfing speed? I find the 3G painfully slow, but it's not just the connection, since if I tether my MacBook Pro to it, it's actually quite reasonable. (I'm tethering right now in fact.) I've heard the 3GS is much faster, but does it still feel slow?

If so, I'm hoping the 3G HD will be much faster for this purpose (but not with too much of a power penalty). I'm thinking part of the problem could be memory availability, not just CPU speed.

IMO, the 3GS feels like the fastest mobile browser outside of the iPad and 3G iPod touch. So I'd say it's the fastest smartphone browser. The Nexus One has a quick browser, but it doesn't load photos and the like as quickly.

If the next iPhone indeed has the A4, or even something downclocked a bit, I imagine it'll be a speed demon.
