Very significant deep scratches from a fall from waist level onto the floor. Apple says it will be $299 for any out of warranty fix including just replacing this screen. A third party will do it for $135 that I found. I can do it myself for $70 for an easy solution that includes the touch screen with the glass or I can make it very difficult on myself by purchasing a $20 kit that only includes the glass - meaning I would have to separate the current glass from the touch screen unit myself.

Suggestions? Anyone have any experience with any of these options.

The thing with Apple is the replacement will have a warranty. Basically, it will be like a new phone again and continue where the original phone left off. If you had it for 2 months, you'll have 10 months left unless you purchase AppleCare. With a third party, you risk voiding the Apple warranty altogether, esp. now that you called Apple and they have a case regarding this issue. I can't say what to do for you, but sometimes the $299 is less of a hassle in the long run.

rapidrepair.com will do a good job of it, and they offer a limited warranty on their work.

I've done it and other iPod repairs before. You need to know your abilities. Don't try and take on too much.

$299 to fix it? You may as well just replace it and try selling the damaged one for parts.
