$999 iBook makes the $1599 12" Powerbook look stupid now...

the extra $600 for a 12" PB gets you 133Mhz more processor, a 32mb better graphics card, 30 more gig of hard drive ($75 upgrade for the PB's 60 gig in an iBook), bluetooth ($50 in an iBook) and a metal casing...

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

The AirPort reception in the iBooks is incredibly much better than in the PBs. That is a major plus.

They're using an ATi Radeon 9200 mobility. Isn't that a rebranded 8500?

Agreed...

The 12" iBook with edu starts at $949, which is very affordable.

Moreover, $1349 with edu discount is making the NEW entry level single processor G5 look very tempting...

I bought an iBook G4 last October as soon as they came out. For $150 less than I paid last year, I can get a faster processor, more ram, and a bigger hard drive now.
iBook G4: 800mhz, 640mb, 40gb ("Astrid")
iPod: 30gb Photo ("Gordon"), 1gb Shuffle ("Tinker Bell")
For the record: I am female

Whining is what Apple updates are for! I haven't got an iBook, I've never had a laptop and I don't plan to get one in the near future, so this really doesn't affect me at all. But looking at the specs of this new one, the first thing I thought was "Well what's the point of a 12" Powerbook then?" I haven't really moaned on forums about anything before like this, but the 12" Powerbook really does look silly now.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Even better is the entry level with combo drive and edu pricing. $1233 is not too bad.

My little 600Mhz iBook G3 is crying now.

However, it still does everything I want from a computer I can throw in my backpack and not really worry about!

I think it's reasonable to expect a PB speed boost soon ... though not to G5 until early next year.

Don't forget that the Powerbook can use monitor spanning, which is not possible on the iBook without an unsupported hack. It's important to some people, anyway.

But yes, I expect the Powerbook to come down in price.

The majority of people who buy PowerBooks by a certain date are students so that major buying season is over. The PBs didn't get updated so we're looking at MacWorld SF. That said, with no upgrade to the PBs I have to wonder if we're going to see a major update.

That said, I think with that new low end option I might some day get a PowerMac. I looked a while ago and it was just way to rich. That said the new one yah it's not DP but whatever, I seriously might get one not this summer but maybe next once my 1Ghz PB starts getting long in the tooth. hehe, I just gota make sure I get a G5 before the aluminum casings won't match

Dang I'm such an astetics whore. I'd probably run it with a crappy CRT for a while too which would be really ironic.

Meh, I can live with a 9200 mobile, even if it does have 32MB. I wouldn't want to game on an iBook much anyway. Hey, at least it has Quartz Extreme.

iMac still has a horrible integrated graphics card for a new machine today.

It is. It reflects poorly on both, but more on the PowerMacs. If you're spending $1500-$2500 on a computer, more than $50 of that should be spent on the video card. You could also say that more than $50 should go towards RAM, or that more than $60 should be spent on the hard drive.

Funny... in the $2000 PowerMac, only about $200 is spent on the optical drive, hard drive, RAM, and video card combined. At least, you could buy all those components for that much money. Apple probably gets them for a lot less than what you'd pay for them, even going to a big-time retailer like NewEgg.

Don't worry about it.

iMac Rev D bought one month before the Slot Loaders, iBook bought two months before new Rev, PowerBook which replaced the iBook bought something like a month before the update.

Buying Macs just isn't fair. I'm looking forward to hearing about the new 8gig iPod minis, It's been about a month so I'm thinking we'll hear pretty soon.

Honestly, the people complaining about having just bought iBooks - iBook updates have happened every 6 months pretty much regular as clockwork at least since the iBook 500 came out (ie about 3.5 years ago). Do a tiny bit of research before investing $1000 or so why don't you?

Wrong. Teachers (and students) can get that price.
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.
