Vista killing any version of OSX has about the same chances of my left nut divorcing my right and moving into my stomach.

I love it!!!

It's 2006...oh, wait, the stupid thing won't be out until 2007, and they still can't shake the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!

Amen on the non-features of Vista. The thing's got monstrous system specs and most computer users aren't going to want to buy a whole new machine just to run this stinker. I mean, I've seen the screenshots and it's just plain ugly. OSX is so clean by comparison.

Poor PC users. They don't know what they're missing. Remember my brothers, we must not hurl invectives at those left in the dark. Pity them that they have not seen the light, do not shun them. Many of you were not born into the fold, after all.

I feel the PC users pain because only 4 short years ago...I was among him. I still remember those days. The crashes. The frustration. Let us pray for our wayward brothers! Pray for them to have a computer that works as reliably as...well, as any other f-ing thing you'd buy!

Seriously folks, just yesterday I was fartin' around on my mom's PC and you know what happened? Crashed it, of course.

As much as I'd love to join in on the MS bashing (trust me, I hate Windows with a bit of a passion), that is clearly photoshopped. Microsoft hasn't used that BSOD since Windows 98. Vista will still have a screen for system crashes ("kernel panics" for us Mac peeps), but that ain't it.

Yeah, MS is really going to beat up the OS world with Vista.

That's why I've converted a good number of friends to either the Mac or Ubuntu Linux because they were fed up with Windows.

I don't recall a massive stampede of customers the night XP went on sale. If anything, the XP marketshare is attributed to new computer purchases. Vista is going to be no exception.

I still don't see anything innovative about Vista that is going to win accolades from computer users out there notwithstanding the Thurrott and Enderle types (and frankly anyone else on Billy Boy's payroll). It's a repackaged XP SP3 as far as I am concerned. Hell, pretty much everyone is going to have to buy new hardware again just to be able to run it.

Vista = Microsoft's Copland.

Cept they have more money to throw at it so it can't die. It will just suck.

Back in the 90s, Apple was looking to catch up to Win95 in regards to multitasking and such. Copland failed set Apple back.

Now Apple is ahead with OS X, MS is looking to catch up and is struggling with Vista.

Both OSs had promised features they never shipped with. Both companies later shipped and will ship stripped down versions MUCH later.

Windriods, you are getting a lemon.

I'm not al too sure that it's going to suck... Guess we'll find out somewhere in 2007 or 2008 or maybe even 2009 ?

No seriously what's the latest word on the release date ? Jan 2007, or later ?

Anyone else notice this on Apple's site, on the Get A Mac page?

4. 114,000 Viruses? Not on a Mac.
Mac OS X was designed with security in mind. Windows just wasn’t built to bear the onslaught of attacks it suffers every day. A Mac offers a built-in firewall, doesn’t advertise its existence on the Net, and isn’t compromised within an hour of being turned on.

That's great.

Apple figured out this strategy after Copland. MS is (hopefully) going to take the same lesson to heart for the future.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I may very well be), but isn't part of that due to the fact that fewer people own Macs? If Apple computers had a bigger market share, then arguably there would also be more viruses and a greater risk.

Well....they NEED TIME to remove as many useful items as possible, and ruin or cancel as many features as they can while still getting as many ad's and viruses as possible. I liked it better when it was named after a cheese, than after a steakhouse.

That's certainly a part of it, I'm sure, but OS X seems very much more inherently secure in its design than Windows (Unix's user- and permissions-based model being part of that). Arguably, of course, as you will find in many bickering matches throughout the fora here, but I'm of the opinion that OS X is much more secure. Though not completely invulnerable, obviously. But I'm not sure much is aside from a calculator. Search around—you'll find many discussions on the subject (OS X v. Windows security, not calculator hacking).

Yes and no. You're right in that there would most certainly be a lot more malware for the Mac if it had the same market position as Microsoft, but at the same time Apple's security design is a lot more robust than Microsoft's (and apparently a lot less obtrusive to the user.)

Even when Apple did have close to 20% of the market on the old Mac OS, they didn't have nearly much malware as Windows did. But they did exist.

Even so, until recently when Microsoft broke the 50% server marketshare barrier, the most common server used was either UNIX or Linux based. However, the most commonly compromised server software was still Windows; mostly those running IIS 5.0 or older.

I agree. While I'll acknowledge that more malicious hackers using OS X will bring more viruses/trojens/worms... I would also like to highlight that OS X is much more streamlined than the Windows counterparts...

I also think we have a fantastic userbase.

Many of the server issues on Windows Servers are user/admin errors. Too many people drinking the Microsoft cool-aid IMHO.

My old server admin didn't know how to close ports on the firewall!

It has also changed considerably over the years [to the point of being an ongoing joke].

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista has a somewhat fair analysis of what happened over the years.

My question is... Which version do you want?

- Windows Vista Starter
- Windows Vista Home Basic
- Windows Vista Home Premium
- Windows Vista Business
- Windows Vista Enterprise
- Windows Vista Ultimate

Me, I'm going to stick with Windows 2K.

I mean, really, if those of us who want to see Microsoft go down in smoke were writing their plans, could we have planned a more disastrous marketing schema for Vista?

What the heck is going on at Microsoft?

They have been doing a great job making money hand over fist with XP Home vs. Professional.

I hear Microsoft will only sell Windows via eBay starting at $.01, with $399 shipping. That's why rumors were flying of a Microsoft/eBay purchase.

I don't want MS to go out of business. I'd like them to be in less "control" of things sure, but not out of business.

Heck if MS tomorrow put out an OS that is better than OS X I would go to it.

I want MS to STOP sucking.

People were hacking into (or trying anyway) unix systems before windows was even around.

People rob gas stations instead of big banks because it's easier. It's not that there are fewer banks than gas stations and therefore they are less of a target, they are simply more secure and not worth it.

I wasn't impyling that was the only reason, only a contributing factor, but thanks for the clarification (and analogy).

Just be glad if you are Microsoft that you aren't still using the "year" naming scheme ala Windows 95, Office 97, etc.

Windows 2003, no, 2005, no, 2006... shoot, 2007... but EARLY 2007... like before 2008... if we remove enough features.

OMG the year naming was the biggest marketing scam ...I hated it. BTW-just about every Mac user I know is also Windows literate, I mean Winboxes are everywhere (duh) so this thread is pretty senseless but it just won't sink in for the Utopians.

Here's my summation:

Steve Jobs wants to build the best personal computers in the world....and get paid.

Bill Gates wants to be the richest man in the world....and sell software.
Please keep in mind the ambiguously selective general understandings we've all agreed upon...

Heck if MS tomorrow put out an OS that is better than OS X I would go to it.

I want MS to STOP sucking.
But they won't stop sucking because they have so much power in the industry. The only time Microsoft puts out a decent product is when they get caught off guard by an emerging portion of the computer industry. IE sucked, until Gates pumped millions into making it decent and making it ubiquitous enough to push Netscape right out of the market. And what happened then? IE started sucking again, that's why now we all use Firefox or Safari or anything but IE. This has happened again and again. It's happening right now with Google.

Microsoft deserves to go out of business because in an industry that is supposed to be innovative, they crush innovation, co-opting or stealing what they need to maintain market dominance and nothing more.

So no, I want MS to go on sucking...and I want them to be buried with that on their metaphorical tombstone: "Sucked 'til the end."

Haven't you guys figured it out by now? "Vista" is really just going to be Steve Balmer in a box.
