Can airport express support a hard drive similar to the way the regular airport can by plugging one in the USB port for printer sharing?

How about NO. It's not a firmware issue, it's a hardware issue. The PRINTER USB port on a regular AirPort Extreme base is for printers. It will NOT work with any other devices-people have tried this and it will not work. That is the definitive answer.

I was wrong. I stumbled (yet again) over "Express", "Extreme" and "the new Extreme" issue, and so I posted completely wrong information. The "Express" (the little box that looks like a wall charger) will only support printers. The "new Extreme" will support ANY USB drive or printer-and maybe other hardware too. It EXPLICITLY supports USB-connected drives, and thus AirDisk.

I don't know why I zipped through that thread and closed it so abruptly-it's not like it was early in the morning and my caffeine levels were too low or something. I'm sorry, and I'll try to do better in the future.

Yeah, keeping them straight-since I have neither-isn't particularly easy for me.

The questions not mentioning "Express" again helped me bungle things as well. And if I'd paid enough attention to what I was writing to say "the original Extreme" instead of generalizing it, things would have been different. Thanks to Unnamed Member for pointing out the inconsistency of my post.

Now a question, (that may or may not be answerable by even the smart guys here): Can a Airport Express boost the signal of an Airport Extreme so that I can use the USB HD and printer connected to the Airport Extreme? I have all three, but I have yet to get the nerve to try it.

If I get the motivation to do this I'll let ya'll know.

Now can an eMac that is connected to an Airport Extreme by ethernet cable use AirTunes on an Airport Express that is boosting an Airport Extreme signal?

I was doing some trouble shooting on my Airport Express and found this on page 29 of the 5.1 manual (most current as far as I know).

Connect the printer or hard disk to the AirPort Express USB port.

I finally tried it and it works!

This works too. I can now control AirTunes from me eMac that does not have an AirPort card in it!
